Imagine the hypocrisy of saying you're pro democracy, and then throwing billions of US taxpayer dollars to support a "democracy" that's run by a de facto dictator who has out-stayed his legal term of office but still refuses to allow an election to be held.

They're communists and therefore fully happy to call it anything, if they get their outcome. If anything, I'd bet they're annoyed at having to through the fraud ritual.

They'll print ballots in front of you, while saying they support democracy and that you can vote for representation.

They'll print currency in front of you, while saying they support private ownership and that you can save for the future.

It's pointless ritual to them, but they'll do it if it maintains power.

I think that it doesn't take very much. You saw some riots during the pandemic, and a ton of crime.

That was the equivalent of a real bad business cycle in the economy. It was largely just people not being at work and the streets being empty. (Whether idle people rioting or the lack of others enabling it). A lot has changed since the last time we did see one, which is maybe the 70s. The politics have changed a lot since even 2008.

I think you are seeing a system hiding a lot of the rot. I think it is closer to the level of deprivation required for people to revolt than most people. That said, I'm not holding my breath. Empires live and die on historical time, not in lifetimes.
