I don't like the stuff I just like the way it smells.

I like what you've done with the place, it feels so airy...

A healthy home has to breathe.

Why is a door floating in mid-air?

[ - ] bosunmoon [op] 0 points 5 monthsNov 2, 2024 09:14:14 ago (+0/-0)

It's haunted.

I've built decks out of Hemlock like that I cut myself in my little sawmill and it never seems to rot.

[ - ] dass 1 point 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 20:18:53 ago (+1/-0)

Yea, but is it (requisite applicable building code/ standards) compliant ?/lol

[ - ] SundayMatinee 0 points 5 monthsNov 1, 2024 17:01:42 ago (+0/-0)

Residential homes generally are not subject to ASCE or IBC design codes. Some jurisdictions might have local requirements. Overall, this building is not from the 1700s or has been modified, as they were not outputting mill steel members like the two I beams.

If we wanted to apply modern design codes to it, you would likely find only minor corrective actions would be needed after an engineering assessment, and those would mostly be related to local buckling or bracing requirements.

There has been a steady trend of improving the focus of both demand loads and member/system capacities that has been rolling back some of the over conservativism of earlier code adoptions.

what kind of wood is that?

[ - ] bosunmoon [op] 0 points 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 20:26:21 ago (+0/-0)

Hemlock, oak, and pine.

[ - ] ModernGuilt 1 point 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 17:49:34 ago (+1/-0)

What a mess

[ - ] bosunmoon [op] 2 points 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 18:01:36 ago (+2/-0)

It's only a mess in modern standards.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 23:16:58 ago (+0/-0)

There appears to be little left of the original timbers. Still cool though.

[ - ] bosunmoon [op] 1 point 5 monthsNov 1, 2024 15:28:17 ago (+1/-0)

We saved all the floors and subfloor, they're going back.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 5 monthsNov 1, 2024 23:30:52 ago (+1/-0)

That’s cool.

[ - ] x0x7 0 points 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 20:42:24 ago (+0/-0)

Back when rooms were a thing. Now everything is open house plan.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 6 monthsOct 31, 2024 23:20:34 ago (+0/-0)

I hate that shit. Had a guy draw up plans for our kitchen remodel and he had two walls taken out for an “open” floor plan.
I said nope, we’re leaving the walls. I dont need to see the kitchen from every room in the house. Plans were redrawn.
There’s a direct correlation between America being fat and the kitchen being the focal point of the home.
