Pumpkins come from the new world but the tradition is a lot older than the Americas so turnips were used traditionally. We use pumpkins too now though cos carving a raw turnip would be a massive pain in the hole I’d imagine. But also in the original story of Stingy Jack it is a turnip he has to use as a lantern to guide his way.
