Anyone able to tell me why? Concern is that it will die again in mid game, but seems to be working perfectly fine so far.

Im going to see if I can replace the fan with something better in case cooling was the issue, but the box was already dust free. I've been testing it with the covers off, but I dont want to keep it like this.

360 just like ps3 had board warping issues due to insufficient thermal reduction

the cure was to completely dismantle it, lay the mobo on a flat surface, and use a heatgun to reflow the solder at the point of failure (PS3 was the GPU, can't recall where the 360 went bad)

the OG 360 was crap, it bailed on me after 2 1/2 years of use with the red rings of death

this was a gift from my brother thats why it hurt so much to lose the console at the time but knowing its issues i didnt even had the stomach to replace it.

same happened with the OG ps3 that just lasted a year more. that one i did replace with the unit that is still collecting dust even today

Heat. Your thermal paste is probably poor and your fan is degraded.

If you can borrow a thermal imager you might be able to spot the malfunctioning component. Something is getting too hot. You could also use a handheld infrared thermometer and see if you can spot the hottest area. Once you find it, check the solder joints in that area. Inspect the components, you might be able to replace it.
