My go to is somehow being survival based, idea being comminated soil would discourage insect predation during the hibernation cycle.
Literally picking the most toxic spot to hide away in when most vulnerable.

I dont understand how the 'researchers' missed this when listing possible explanation.

Otoh - article is self-serving for 'more research', for such a short piece 'more research needed' was only mentioned 4 or 5 times.

I had a bumblebee nest in my riding lawnmower. I bought a black cover for it to piss them off, when I came back they were gone.

I discovered I had a fuel filter leak and it drained the tank dry. I wonder if the fumes might have played a role...
