might be my imagination but i dont think any of their songs are particularly recognised to begin with. I reckon i vaguely remember hearing 'Free Me' as a kid (in aus. definitely not known here)
Sympathy has a 'Top of the Pops' video clip so theyve popped up from time to time but even in the UK they dont seem to be all that well known. Ex in the uk never brought them up, my old man who brought me up on every english rock band that ever existed somehow missed them. Slade are only really known because of a christmas song then everyone goes back over their other shit and calls them iconic (theyre absolutely not, and 'Merry Xmas Everyone' is as exactly as shit as it already sounds) but you know, americans have Die Hard for Christmas, us poms got Zulu (epic... seriously, watch it.) and Slade (ew) Queen youd be 100% correct with, great band, bohemian rhapsody and we will rock you are the two most overplayed fucking songs in history... but how many Metallica fanboys know 'Stone Cold Crazy' is Freddies?
i dont know how the fuck my dad missed uriah heep, i never heard of them until a chick i worked with when i was 15/16 handed me very 'eavy very 'umble which was great, then promptly forgot about them until about 5 years ago, now theyre never out of rotation. never ever forgot Gypsy. hell even managed to not introduce my old man to them.
first album, what.... 71? last album? Last year - Chaos and Colour. At least three absolute fucking bangers on it. Hurricane, Golden Light, Save Me Tonight. Stop reading this shit and listen to em.
@I_scream_trucks...do you like Uriah Heep???point of interest, they were no dummies or attention seeking losers, they were talented musicians and composers and well educated...fucking Hensley is in a league of his own when it comes to writing lyrics...good you like em
fucking love em. if theyre over in oz any time its a guaranteed run for tickets for me.
Hensley was in a league of his own, long gone from Heep and passed away a couple of years back. Its only Mick Box now (underrated AS FUCK guitarist) but hes specifically hunted for great organists and drummers for years specifically to keep the original sound.
You want them at peak - Salisbury somewhere in the middle, Byron (left 79 dead 85, alcohol) Box (still going) Hensley (Left like... 79, did a few albums and gigs, died 2021?) I think its Lee Kerslake on drums who ended up with Ozzy Osbourne and passed away... maybe last year or year before, and Gary Thain (dead late 70s heroin i think) from New Zealand on the up and down running bass you can hear in the solo fucking rare semi freestyling rather than only keeping a beat in the right key. Jogging music for me. Singer now is... Bernie Shaw... no idea where hes from and other than Box i havent paid much attention to who else is there but latest album a banger, had no idea it existed (thank you Deezer!)
This is the one that sucked me riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight back in about 5 years back, never heard it before, couldnt stop listening to it. Then ended up having an urgent need to learn July Morning on guitar. I got into a dutch band called 'Focus' at the same time - more organs, but also fucking flutes, yodelling, whistling, and all sorts of weird shit, but another unheard of epic guitarist (Jan Akkerman) another Epic drummer (er.. Pierre Van Der Linden) and Organ/Flautist (Thys Van Leer) Van Leer and Van Der Linden still going now as well after Van Leers son practiced a bunch of dads songs with his mates, got his dad to join in and pretty much resurrected the band which i reckon is actually a bit fucking epic. These dudes were more like Emerson Lake and Palmer with funny accents.
@i_scream_trucks...you're not just up on the status of good rockers, you're all over it. I was listening to "Sunrise" with a chick back in 74, I ended up babysitting her after too much lemon gin (panty remover juice) at the high school dance, it was Friday and I was pissed because I was headed out on a duck hunt early morning Sat, anyways I had one cassette tape in my truck and it was Uriah Heep and the chick wanted it played over and over, forget the album cover name but I was hooked on them...Byron was talented as fuck but he had alcohol issues, but Hensley, Thain, Lawton(misspell?) were underrated big time. You know, after repetitive playing of music it wears out in short time but Uriah Heep, ELP(Greg Lake, King Crimson) Ian Hunter(fantastic song writer) and I'll throw in Gary Moore (Loner), I never tire of them...glad we share the interest. Now listen to Lady in Black
