The Greys are what we have in NYC. Like twice in my life I’ve seen a Black squirrel. Never once saw a Red one.

Grey squirrels are from North America while red squirrels are European. The greys were brought to Europe as an invasive species and killed off a lot of the native reds through disease and out-competition (the greys are significantly larger than the reds). So there’s no reason you would ever see a red squirrel in NYC, you’d need to come to Europe to see them. They’re still dominant in the west of Ireland cos the greys are unable to cross the Shannon (the large river that we view as the natural border between east and west Ireland).

They are mostly outdoing the reds because they can eat acorns that aren't ripe yet and digest the tannins, but reds can't and have to leave it on the tree until it is fully ripe. So, the grey's eat and store all the food before the reds are even able to grab them, and their larger size makes it impossible for reds to protect their home turf.

I've seen red squirrels in the Midwest and Southeast. My favorite squirrel (in fairness, like being my favorite turd) is the Sherman's fox squirrel. They're even more impressive IRL - the white on the back and tail is in stark contrast to the black and gold on the head and belly. But they're big, fat, and slow compared to other squirrels, which explains their threatened status.

It's true, grey squirrels are one of a few invasive animals in England. The french partridge is another, and everyone who applauded the red kite population boom is now silent about their predatory effects.

(not including the invaders which speak arabic, that's an insult to animals)
