Telegram will better cooperate with law enforcement agencies and hand over the IP addresses and phone numbers of users in response to “valid requests”, in a major policy change from the encrypted messaging platform just weeks after the arrest of its founder.
Telegram CEO and founder Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris in August and later charged with complicity relating to crimes being perpetrated on Telegram, including the distribution of child abuse material and hacking software.
He was also charged with refusing to cooperate with investigations into this illegal activity on Telegram.
and i only just heard about it today, they have been really quiet about this.
Since it's all the same, my wife and I moved to Skype since it's already supported in Windows. They're reading our communications either way, so we just use GnuPG-encrypted e-mail if something is truly sensitive.
"While many of Telegram’s rivals have adopted end-to-end encryption, Telegram does not, and unless users purposefully set up a “secret chat”, the company is still able to read messages being sent on the platform."
Seems like if they had default into end encryption then no one could see what the messages were and there would be nothing to hand over and this Pavlov guy could have saved himself a lot of trouble. Now of course everyone will leave telegram except for the few old geezers that never understood what it's appeal was and they'll hang around just like old geezers hang around on Facebook. Everybody else who sophisticated even if they don't have anything to hide will still want to go to a truly private platform so they'll find a new one and thus the cycle continues although I guess the new one will probably be run by a Jew and it will be secretly handing over information even though they claim not to. The real problem that the cabal had with this Pavlov guy as I don't think he was a Jew and he actually wanted to protect people's privacy.
Telegram was never an "encrypted messaging platform" but they serve as an easy kill in an adjacent space that is close enough in the Normiesphere. It's a narrative beachhead they can use before burning through Signal and then Briar and Session etc.
