Fission as it's proposed typically happens when a neutron is added to an already unstable atom, which breaks apart into two atoms plus additional radiation including free neutrons. These neutrons can either be absorbed by more stable atoms, or can go on to break apart more unstable atoms.

Nuclear reactors work by controlling the absorption rate of neutrons colliding with unstable atoms. Through a variety of methods ranging from reflecting neutrons back at the reactor to increase the reaction rate, and adding control rods to absorb neutrons and reduce the reaction rate.

Nuclear fission bombs are supposed to work by not controlling the absorption and instead allowing the fission of atoms to chain react, all of which is started by compressing a near subcritical mass of fissionable material into critical mass, and then hitting it with a large volume of free neutrons created through a chain reaction of non-fission radioactive decay.

For nukes to be fake, this requires neutron collision with unstable elements to never result in a fission, or a fission to never release a neutron.
This explanation creates issues for how nuclear reactors work however, as supposedly they work on the same principles, but in a controlled fashion.

This is why I asked if anyone had an actual alternative explanation.

There are different types of nukes with varying yields and long term radioactivity amounts. The two biggest are fusion nukes, which use fission to start a fusion reaction, and pure fission nukes.
