Where's all the hate for video games on here?

submitted by Stonkmar to Discussion 7 monthsSep 25, 2024 20:04:32 ago (+19/-4)     (Discussion)

There's the anti alcohol posts.
There's the anti thots/women in general posts.
There's the anti weed posts.
There's the anti-whatever is wasting time, not being ideal white posts.

But there's barely any anti video game posts on here. Doesn't anybody see them as a waste of time? As part of the 'bread and circuses'?
I do.

Do they get you physically fit?
Do they boost your IQ?
Are they real social connections?

I like video games, in moderation. Let's discuss.

I think the popularity of Crash Bandicoot was entirely astroturfed. I was social back then and i don’t remember anybody playing Crash Bandicoot. Just me.

we had it but that game sucked, lame 3d platformer and platformers are already lame.

Playstation has all the medievil games on Playstation Plus and you can either download them or stream them on PS4 and PS5.

Funnily enough it's the last game I've played. I've been emulating them when I get the urge to play a game. I liked Crash as a kid. The gameplay holds up. Simple stupid fun.

Crash bandicoot was THE fucking shit man. Rayman was pretty good too. Wasn't too crazy about Spyro though.

Last time I played a video game, donkey Kong was in the arcades.

Yeah well I being a Boomer never had much to do with video games, until bare ass babes and big dik dudes galloping all over the place started turning up on my YouTube feed .. I don't particularly hate 'em however if the gamers can get away with it on YT, what's to stop anyone else doing their "thing" and posting their stuff wherever they like??

Most modern AAA games are woke as fuck, and push their messaging so hard they've stopped being fun. As a result people have been tapering off on playing those games, and therefore it's not in the zeitgeist any more, aside from some crunchy memes.

They're better than tv/movies but I agree that I wasted too much of my life on video games.

Video games are better than sitting on your ass watching TV in free your time. Like all the fat fags complain about.

[ - ] Merlynn 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 01:40:12 ago (+1/-1)

IQ is based on pattern recognition. Beating video games is all about pattern recognition. Therefore, playing video games improves your pattern recognition and, thusly, your IQ. So yes, video games make you brain good.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 03:18:25 ago (+0/-0)

playing video games improves your pattern recognition and, thusly, your IQ

That's not how IQ works. You get a certain amount. Yes, you can increase your usage of what is available, but you cannot directly increase IQ.

Because it is genetic. And it mostly follows from the father.

[ - ] Merlynn -1 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 18:46:21 ago (+0/-1)

Do you know how they test your IQ? Pattern recognition. If that's improved, you will score higher on the test. Ergo, your IQ goes up.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 7 monthsSep 27, 2024 02:29:57 ago (+0/-0)

You number goes up, not your actual IQ, otherwise known as the G factor that IQ is trying to measure.

[ - ] Merlynn -1 points 7 monthsSep 27, 2024 14:50:11 ago (+0/-1)

See,you're trying to weasel out of it but you can't deny it. IQ tests are based on pattern recognition. Ergo, the higher your pattern recognition, the higher your only measurable IQ score.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 7 monthsSep 27, 2024 15:34:54 ago (+0/-0)

Doubling down on your failure isn't going to make it better. You don't understand it, and don't want to. Likely, you can't understand it.

[ - ] Merlynn -1 points 7 monthsSep 27, 2024 19:06:47 ago (+0/-1)

What's to understand? Score go up. Pretty simple.

[ - ] Freespeechplease 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 05:11:37 ago (+0/-0)

Besides some retro emulators I use a few times a year. I don't play any games. And I feel most of us here simply don't give a shit about modern games.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 08:31:23 ago (+0/-0)

The only video game I ever played was Pong, when it came out in 1976. After a few times, I gave up, it was too frustrating, and I saw no point to it.

[ - ] __47__ 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 10:48:32 ago (+0/-0)

The only games I really play anymore are builders.

Cities Skylines
Prison Architect
Jurassic World Evolution

These three examples will test your IQ, problem solving skills and planning ahead. In cities I need to plan the highway years before I'm able to implement it. I need to plan roadways to handle a higher population density years before that's the case. I need to adjust taxes to cover expenses. I need to increase land value by adding parks and Rec. I need to make mass transit work efficiently. Monitoring health, education and safety. There's a fuck ton to do and watch out for and if you don't plan ahead properly things in the city are going to get really bad.

Many games are retarded, especially modern ones.

Almost no games contribute to fitness, notable exceptions are Beat Saber if you have VR, or maybe Pokemon Go if you tolerate mobile and won't get raped in an alley.

Many games increase intelligence, general knowledge, problem-solving or critical thinking, especially older ones. Conducive to that, they are great at training people into assuming a solution exists, which creates effective, unrelenting problem-solvers.

Gaming can initiate social connections, but completing them requires actually going to meet-ups and events.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 03:16:22 ago (+1/-0)

There's a whole genre of fitness games, DDR being notable among them.

I like games and its really dumb to think they are stupid, they hold a huge amount of influence over society, particularly the youth in their formative years.

Our side needs to be more involved its madness to just sit back and let commies take over a medium that is so influential.

I’ll bitch about video games more if you need.

I did play World of Warcraft and Minecraft when it was new. Shit, I still intend to buy Resident Evil 1 once it’s released again.

But Resident Evil 1 is something I play maybe once a year or so. I can’t see building a life around this shit.

Alcohol is gay. Marijuana is loser shit. Whores are created by weak fathers.

What's a "video game", though?

I mainly play DCS World, where I fly a study-level F-16block.50

It has all sorts of value, providing both entertainment, and intellectual exercise.

What about chess? RTS games?

[ - ] PostWallHelena 2 points 7 monthsSep 25, 2024 22:38:34 ago (+2/-0)

Ive never played video games. They appear to be addictive from where Im standing.

[ - ] Her0n 5 points 7 monthsSep 25, 2024 23:33:29 ago (+5/-0)

People with addictive personalities can get addicted to anything.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 11:51:22 ago (+0/-0)

Everyone can be addicted to something. Everyone. Some may have a predisposition to one thing or another. Thats genetic. But if I could control what you ate and drank I could addict you to alcohol for example. Anyone can be addicted to it. Its physically addictive to all humans.

I think I was predisposed to alcohol, genetically. I had other friends that wanted pot, pot, pot, all day and all night. Pot wasn’t all that great for me. I realized these differences are genetic. Ive tried other addictive behaviors and most had no appeal to me. Ive seen porn. I never wanted to look at it every day. Why is that? Aren’t I an “addictive personality?” Different people are going to have different propensities to different addictions. Black people are not big drinkers but they love crack because I guess it amplifies their personalities or something.

I just think its inaccurate to assume that some people can get addicted and other people can’t. Or that an addiction to one thing implies a predisposition to be addicted to all addictions.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 20:29:12 ago (+0/-0)

Sure, if you want to nit pick. This is why I know you're a woman.

I know I could easily get addicted to marijuana, because I have in the past. Now that my grows are my only source I have been able to curb my usage to special occasions only instead of every day all day like in my twenties. I went crazy, chasing the jewish programming we are all bombarded with in our lives.

I now only smoke when I choose to, not out of compulsion.

In fact It's been other sic months since I last smoked and we have plenty in storage. I just don't experience the addict itch anymore.

It's the same with video games for me, no longer feel an itch, but I still play them every few months.

My old gaming buddies are on every day, telling me about this new game or another update or expansion. It doesn't matter to me anymore. I tell them I will only play games with them if they post pictures of their gardens or other real world projects they are working on. They've all made decent progress, bit they are all still addicted severely.

I guess my rambling point is that addiction is far more nuanced than my initial simplistic statement, but I wasn't planning on writing an assertion on the subject.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 0 points 7 monthsSep 26, 2024 21:58:45 ago (+0/-0)

Sure, if you want to nit pick. This is why I know you're a woman.

Right. Like how could anyone still think I was a man? My comments are 3x longer than anyone elses and I have to win every argument.

Anyway I don’t see the issue as addicted /not addicted. I think that the more you use, the more addicted you are. Therefore if you are only using occassionally I still think you are slightly addicted. Im not sure how infrequently you would have to be using to be not addicted at all. But my guess is that you would be somewhat addicted for a period right after you use, no matter how long it has been between uses. By “addiction” I guess I mean an abnormal state in your brain where you are not emotions in the same way, well after you have come down from the high. But that state might be difficult to notice or measure if you smoked very infrequently. I think that if you are enjoying the high, there is going to be a comparable amount of depression that you will experience over days or weeks after you come down.

I think games work the same way. Supposedly you are enjoying a flood of dopamine in your brain. Afterward there is less dopamine being released when you try to garden.

For me I felt like booze was my missing piece. I really felt better, probably because Im an anxiety prone person. Weed just increased my anxiety unless I used it with alcohol. I never used pot without alcohol because I didn’t want to have a bad time. But there was a period when I was using pot rather a lot and began to crave it. So I knew for sure it was addictive at that point.

Video games are a fucking cancer.

They're no different than casinos. They're like a gambling addiction.

Because of the addition of dlc's people can dump thousands of dollars into retarded mobile games.

Children scream and wine and beg their parents to buy all these points cards or whatever so that they can buy a stupid shirt on their DLC mobile game.

Parents will dump thousands of dollars over time into these games. Because they don't realize 50 bucks for a birthday 100 bucks for Christmas adds up.

Don't let your children play video games. Let them ride dirt bikes. lawn tractors. BB guns air rifles.

Video games are terrible. All you guys out there stuck on these games get out there and get a wife and get children. Grow up mother fucker stop being brainwashed.

Happy?

The navy conducted a study that proved gamer develop better ability to "solve problems without prior knowledge or experience"

“Built into their very designs were good learning principles, principles supported, in fact, by cutting-edge research in cognitive science, the science that studies human thinking and learning. Many of these principles could be used in schools to get kids to learn things like science, but, too often today schools are returning to skill-and-drill and multiple-choice tests that kill deep learning.”(Bedigian, 2007)

Paul Kearney, a lecturer employed by Unitec Computing in New Zealand, also believes that video games play a very important role in the development of cognitive skills. Paul, using software designed by the US Military, tested the multitasking skills of 40 individuals, after they engaged in eight hours of gaming each day. The results showed dramatic increases in their cognitive abilities, but only after playing certain types of games. Paul went on to explain that, “It appears that the improvements are due to Counter Strike’s immersive environment. We also tested people after playing Quake, which is more of a fantasy-type first-person-shooter, and there weren’t the same increases in the test scores. It seems that the realistic scenarios and higher stakes in Counter Strike meant players concentrated harder and as a result the improvements in their cognitive abilities were more marked.”(Kearney, (n.d.))

Video games that are designed specifically for training purposes have shown to be an invaluable resource to more serious institutions, including the United States Department Of Defense. Games provide us with the best kind of learning because the student does not need to be aware of the learning process in order to benefit. A recent article released on the DoD website makes several mentions that current studies show an increased perceptual ability in video game players and what they have called “Fluid Intelligence” or the ability to “solve problems without prior knowledge or experience”. The following is an excerpt from that article:

“Research under way by the Office of Naval Research indicates that video games can help adults process information much faster and improve their fundamental abilities to reason and solve problems in novel contexts.”(Freeman, 2010)

The US Military is well known for it’s open minded approach to adopting unorthodox training procedures and has never been shy about using simulations and games to enhance troop readiness. A 2003 article of Wired.com reports that “For years, the U.S. armed forces have used big, sophisticated simulators with hydraulics, wall-size video screens and realistic cockpits. But such gear costs millions of dollars — far too pricey, even by military standards, to be widely available. That’s why video games make sense.” The article also discusses the vast resources the military is spending on developing these products, “Full Spectrum Warrior was created through the Institute for Creative Technologies in Marina Del Rey, California, a $45 million endeavor formed by the Army five years ago to connect academics with local entertainment and video-game industries.”(Wired.com, 2003)

As more and more research becomes available on the subject, video games seem to do more good than harm. We should rejoice that even in our leisure, as children and adults, we are capable of expanding our abilities. As the digital age lays it’s rewards at our feet, we are encouraged to create and to dream. Through our play, we learn and through our learning we evolve. So go ahead, rot your brains out.
