I dilly-dallied, and my methods were dipshitty, even dingbattish. Here is that table I was working on with only a few steps left.

We went with the grain of the large part which went against the grain of those cross beams. So the last step is going to be to tape off and then sand horizontally just those beams. Then oil or something. The underneath areas are downright glossy. Have to bridge the gap a bit

What wood is that and what finishing products did you use?

I don't know what it is. It's old and it's from some famous designer so we tried to undo all the damage which was extensive.

It was 80 grit sandpaper and Murphy's Oil and then eventually 220. Added old english to see what it would look like finished. But we can just keep taking off layers. It is a neat medium, wood.

Looks like standard oak and pine.

Beautiful! My wife bought me something called tung oil to finish my table in.

Tung oil is simple and effective but you still want a solvent to help it penetrate.

Thanks!

Something else to consider, tung oil's selling point is that it's food safe and it can ensure harsh conditions like being dipped into a hot pot of stew. For furniture you can use linseed oil or some other option.

Dis is de way. If you would have used power tools you would have had a lot more issues. Do many 7+ coats of a spray on oil based poly. Lots of thin coats are better than a few thick. Sand it lightly between coats with something really fine if you have it. Knock down the mountains, fill in the valleys.
