The concept of "face" plays heavily in chink culture. It's essentially their version of the Western axiom "fake it till you make it." They're a success-oriented society with no underpinning of moral scruples. Unlike their counterparts in the West, Chinese consider faking it to be a good thing. This concept extends to all things Chinese. It explains their fake products and fake cities. It explains why even cheapo chink goods will often have the trappings of luxury. They see fraud as fine if it's an avenue to success. Once they make it, they can gloss over the QA failures and collapsed apartment buildings.
