They've largely been obsoleted by 3d printers.

Legos were originally quasi-engineering tools to develop tacit engineering skills in the minds of young boys. In this respect, they've been outclassed by 3D printers, as I know people who are gifting their 8-10 year old kids bambu printers already.`

They pivoted mid 90s to cash in on pop culture through models as you said, but in this respect they have also been outclassed by 3D printers as well. They are almost entirely obsolete, especially given they are made out of ABS while printers are now looking at nylon and beyond.
