This is especially notable given the propensity of conservative reactionary Christians to ban even what would ordinarily be seen as usefully right-wing books. Stendhal's 'The Red and the Black' - which I've previously offered as the best novel of the 19th century, was banned by both the Catholic Church and Tsarist Russia for example. Its hero, Julien Sorel, was a Nietzschean superman before Nietzsche, but without any particular anti-religious sentiment.
