Because Linux has absolutely no interest in being anything but a niche enthusiast operating system in the consumer space.
The fact that Mint is as good as it gets for a Linux GUI is sad.

i3wm is far superior to what Mint has.
But, normies will never bother to go down that rabbit hole.

I have no use for a tiling window manager. I'd stick to Fluxbox for a ultra-lightweight WM.

That's what noobs say.

People are lazy.
Go to any place that sells laptops/desktops.
Are there any with Linux?
No.
And that's why it's not popular.

Because android is an outright copy of Apple’s work (since Google is incapable of independent thought), and Apple’s work, despite being built on BSD and NeXTSTEP, is designed to remove the “computer” from the computer and let people do their respective work without needing to know how their sausage is made.

What does android have to do with Linux, anyway?

Ease of Use and wide adoption. Dur.

Because Iphone is still more popular than Android.

Android is ghetto. Get an iPhone if you want a quality mobile operating system. And if you run a business, using Google Docs is the most ghetto shit ever.

And no one wants to install Linux when you can go to the store and purchase a computer that works outside the box.

I’m not exactly sure, but I thought Android was based on FreeBSD. But I’ve slept since I ever looked into it.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 0 points 7 monthsSep 9, 2024 15:50:03 ago (+0/-0)

OSX was forked from FreeBSD and rapidly diverged. At this point there is virtually no commonality between those kernels.

Yes but Android doesn’t use OSX.

I was implying that you were mixing up what forked off what. Android forked from the Linux kernel.

We all read the stories of the hapless Linux tinkerers spending hundreds of hours trying to get their computer to do something like 'print', or any random normal function. Most people aren't autistic enough to want to do that. (peace be upon Terry Davis)

That really isn't true anymore, btw.

My mom had Windows on her laptop.
Every time a popup message would appear, stating some minor problem, (like memory sticks being ejected) she would call me and ask if she has a virus.
Finally, I got done playing that game, so I installed Ubuntu.
The nice thing about Linux is it doesn't bother you with mundane messages, because the assumption is that the user is competent.
The irony is that it never gives you messages that would scare a normie.

Try Linux again.

Probably because linux enthusiasts are absolutely insufferable.

I am not. Just ask my wife.

Oh wait, she left me.

Joke's on you.
We don't care.

Point in case.

1. Because Windows is entrenched on the desktop market, and

2. Because Microsoft was unable to develop a mobile edition of Windows for smartphones that the market would embrace in any significant way.

I was one of the unlucky souls that actually had a phone with Windows ME on it. It was fucking awful, especially in comparison with Apple and Android phones of the day. If MS had gotten into the game earlier they might have had a chance, maybe.

The sweet spot for Windows was Win 7. That version was still mostly user-centric while at the same time providing the ease-of-use that the majority of users wanted/needed, BUT it was also still accessible for anyone who wanted to make the OS 'their own'. This was clearly a situation that Microsoft could not tolerate.

Starting with Win10 MS closed those doors, forcing users into an ecosystem that MS could completely control. Apple had been doing that with the Mac since day 1 and the install base had lapped it up. But Apple always had, and still has, the cachet that allows them to get away with leading users around by the nose.

Windows has been are harder sell given the Wild West the early DOS day. But today MS has pretty much backed the users into a corner, and mostly both sides are happy with the status quo.

Windows users that reject both MS's dictatorial approach and Windows' increasingly closed environment have already switched to Linux by now. There are only a few apps that still require a dedicated Windows PC to run/run well. And yes it can take some work to get your apps and games running well on Linux but also increasingly that amount is becoming tolerable to the point where regularly you hardly even notice it any more.

But it's important to note that an existing typical Windows user has zero incentive to make the switch, because: Windows comes reinstalled with the cost buried in the PC price, and most people are 'happy enough' with Windows.

It's also worth noting that Linux and Android are completely different products from the end user POV so suggesting that one should lead to the other is borderline nonsensical.

Some folks got better shit to do.

That's because millions of people around the World are too stupid to know that their Android phones are powered by Linux! If you ask most normies what os their Android phones use, they would stare back at you blankly! Ask them a question about sportsball or the kardashians, THAT they'll know!

[ - ] anon 2155467 0 points 7 monthsSep 9, 2024 15:33:21 ago (+0/-0)

Too stupid? Or they don't care?

[ - ] puremadness 0 points 7 monthsSep 9, 2024 23:51:01 ago (+0/-0)

They obviously don't care.
Indifference leads to ignorance, also obvious.

Because you have to install Linux yourself (for the most part). ChromeOS (Linux that transitioned) took off because you could go to a store and pick one up. Perhaps Mint or System76 or the like will get popular (or brave enough) to team up with Target or BestBuy.
