When I was a child of about 10 I was setting in the yard one evening. Happened to notice the ground moving in one little spot. After a few minutes this slimy little critter slowly crawled out from under the ground. It sat there for a little and the slimy stuff dried and hardened. A little while later the hard shell broke open and a cicada made it's way out. The shriveled up "wings" started opening and spreading out larger and larger. The whole process took a few hours. Then little dude flew away.
A pretty good evening for a 10 year old country boy.

I've watched that process before, but as an adult. That phase it goes through drying it's wings, when they're that blue/green iradescent is magical.

He's trying to mate with you.

That's literally it's only goal at this point in it's life cycle

Or maybe he already did and now he just wants to hangout with a cool dude with his last moments

I remember picking the shells off of trees as a boy on a trip to illinois
