If you had a way to keep adding fuel (coal?) to the burn chamber, you could theoretically never stop. Good question about the water tanks. The capacitance on that system would have to be small for a steam engine. He'd run out of water far before running out of burning material.

Notice without giant flywheels to generate momentum (steam locomotives have many) , video skips the part where they use a tow or push vehicle to get it going from a start.
