I did use it some years ago to learn irish. It worked pretty well. The forum is run by woke libtards though. I assume its still free.

I’m using it right now for a couple languages. I’m finding that I am learning a lot of words in their sandbox and can go thorough the lessons fairly well, however recalling them later in the real world off the top of my head and remembering what they mean is proving difficult.

Japanese being a case in point. I can read the characters on the app, but if I’m watching something from Japan, I only recognize a character here or there and I forget what sounds they represent. It doesn’t help that Japanese strings all the words together into one long sentence. If you don’t know the actual words then you have no idea where one word stops and the next starts.

Although I’ve only been at it for 114 days so I shouldn’t really expect too much at this point I suppose.

Same for me. For Japanese. I can remember the words and there meaning like gohan is rice or mizu is water but how am I suppose to remember the Japanese characters they use? I feel like Duolingo is missing something

Actually there is a lot of hidden stuff in Duolingo that isn’t intuitive. I just recently found that if you click/touch on the description for the course section, it takes you to a screen where there’s a tiny “details” button. Click on that and it will show you verb tenses, word order, etc. that would be great to know ahead of time so you understand the sentences they’re throwing at you better.

がんばってね!
