Obviously to bow down and worship the sun, moon, or stars, would be idolatry, but without the knowledge of the signs in the heavens how would the Magi have been able to worship Messiah.
The disciples asked:
7 And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? …
Messiah answered:
… 25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Luke 21 KJV
All the signs given in the book of Revelation, even if they were considered to be metaphorical, require a knowledge of the signs in the heavens to be understood.
