MIL is an Alcoholic

submitted by anon to askanon 8 monthsAug 19, 2024 12:00:48 ago (+2/-0)     (askanon)

She visits a few times a year to see her grandsons grow up but I hate when she comes because she drinks from noon til dark and plays music all day.

My wife knows, we talk about it often. Not sure what to do, we don't really trust her near the kids, nor do I want them driving them around at all.

Any tips on dealing with a 70yr alcoholic? Previously a smoker.

Just have them over for dinner. Pretty easy to handle.

Become a StraightEdge household. "Sorry, no alcohol or drinking in our house and lives now."

We kind of already do that but I can say no liquor in the house. Figured she just sneak it.

They won't quit or entertain the idea unless they want to quit. Horse to water and all.

Yeah I don't really have aspirations of quitting as an option. She quit smoking about 3 years ago but I'm fairly certain that's the pharmaceuticals working, not her.

As well, alcohol is something that if the user is hard into. Quitting cold can kill them.

Family is important but you always need to make sure you are in control of the situation when shes around. Accordingly never put yourself ie. your family in a position where she could cause, even indirectly, any harm. If she wants to visit that's fine but you or your wife must be there 100% of the time. No heading out for a few minutes and leaving grannie in charge. I can guarantee she will do something that in the least will ruin your (ie. you and your wife) relationship with her forever. That's the absolute minimum potential downside. Like is say family is important, even if one of them is a raging alcoholic.

Further on this. Alcoholism is genetic. That's no guarantee that your wife will become a boozehound as well but it pays for you to keep an eye open for the signs of drinking that is out of control. It's up to her, of course, and frankly there's little you'll be able to do to help her if she starts hitting the sauce long and hard. But forewarned and all that.

Anyhow. Best of luck with the MIL.

Thanks, just on the last note we don't drink.

We don't allow alcohol around our children. Simple as that.

Buy her a small car and move to a city for a few years. /jk

Just don't let her be responsible for your kids
