I say "think of an apple" and the other tries to form the item in their mind (round with bumps on the bottom, likely red or mostly red, little stem, little shine).
These simpletons apparently cannot make the mental image.
Your brain is probably good at constructing images and video with sensory input from your eyes. Switch over to internal input and create your own images and 'video'.
If you haven't been doing that, you might need to practice to develop skills.
I sort of have the opposite problem described here: each word I read/hear is extremely vivid to me, and as I'm listening/reading an image representing the words flashes in my mind. When the sentence ends, I'm left with a little "scene" in my head that was formed by the combination, tone, etc., of the statement. It can be overwhelming at times.
I wonder if something's wrong with me? I'm able to vividly imagine scenarios or recall a memory with great detail, especially when I'm falling asleep. This condition described in the article seems so bizarre to me.
Exactly what it sounds like, though not to imply a static two dimensional picture. It’s full on auditory and visual and can be manipulated however I choose. You’re telling me you have no concept of visualization? Sad.
I've heard about this 'phenomenon' for several years now, and I always find myself thinking this is the psychological outcome of brain rot. It's not that people who claim this disability lack absolute capacities to visually represent qualities like colors and textures (etc.), it's that they are unpracticed and they lack the focus to do it. It's an attentional disorder, not a disability of the faculties for visualizing. These people have dopamine systems that are fucking fried. They lack patience, executive thinking and planning skills, and the ability focus. They're used to having all of their mental contents supplied to them via doomscrolling.
This doesn't seem to be related to intelligence, as far as I know. Richard Feynman used to tell the story, that some of his colleague physicists could talk while counting seconds in their heads, while others couldn't.
It turned out that the ones who could, counted using mental images of the numbers flipping, while the ones who couldn't had an inner monologue counting. Both groups were highly intelligent people at the Manhattan project.
I've known I've had this since sometime in the early 1980's. I was into competitive target shooting and the coaches were always harping on visualization, "seeing" a match through in your head and I could never do it. One of them was ALWAYS saying "what happens when I say "don't think of a pink elephant? ~ you see one, don't you" and I was like, nope... I logically knew what he was talking about, could remember seeing them in cartoons, but I don't "see" images when I close my eyes. At best, I "see" snow, like what used to happen on TV at midnight when it went off the air, but usually it's just blackness, occasionally interrupted with something that resembles a pebble tossed into a still pond of water, Maybe with a muted color attached.
And trust me, I fucking Tried to make it work as that is a universal "truth" to highly performing people and I continued down the shooting path into the Olympic Team Trials for both Beijing and London. I've put in my 10,000 hours.
As for your theories... I was allowed an hour of TV a day growing up, except for the few years we didn't have one. I went through school with just under a 4.0 GPA (kinda fucked because I was in AP classes that weighted as a 5) and managed to retire at the age of 43 and still holding.

I tangentially knew a girl who couldn't visualize things, and instead translated what most people do as visual thinking into math, basically. Last I heard, it served her pretty well in life. It's not the end of the world if your brain compensates in other ways, it's just not likely. The vizualization thing is a good basic proxy for having an active mind.
Same - never could it and it really hasn't held me back professionally. Indeed as, most people can do it this suggests is normative. Maybe those that can't are gifted in other ways.

For people who claim they can do this, picture a car wheel in your mind and let's examine it. How many nuts does if have, and what angles are each rotated to? What's the shape of the hubcap? What kind of valve covers does it have (plastic, metal, spiky, TPMS)? Any cracks around the tire? How many cracks? Are they straight or angled? How aired up is it? What's the lighting like, is it bright light or diffuse light? Is the hubcap damaged or pristine? Are there any tire weights along the rim? Any branding or logos? How are the treads? What is the tread pattern? Is the pattern of a regular spacing or irregular? Did it change at all while examining it?

Can you hit a baseball if you aren't looking? You have to recognize, retain, recall.
Organize, cluster, make it meaningful, and associate it.
And create goals, break that into small steps, track and complete them.
