I watched a 2 hour talk by somebody who studied life expectancy between vegetarians and meat eaters and found no difference in expectancy (only the reason why you died was different.)
I'll sum up his talk in 2 hours:
Sugar and eating out at restaurants is what kills you. Good omega 3:6 ratio is what keeps you alive. (Salmon). He believed in a leafy green Greek diet, avoiding restaurants or processed sugar. And had all the stats to prove it. Said if you get caught having to go to a restaurant just order a salad minus the dressing.
I was summoned here by a troll but I may as well weigh in since Im a vegetarian and I have looked into it. Health is not my main motive for not eating meat.
I think you are more or less right. Some studies have shown a small boost in life expectancy for lacto-ovo vegetarians and semi-vegetarians such as pesco-lacto-vegetarians over meat eaters— about a year on average. Vegans seem to have a similar life expectancy to meat eaters— poorer than lacto-ovo vegetarians.
That is when you adjust for BMI. Vegans however have the lowest BMI and have the longest actual lifespan as a result. That is according to a study on seventh day adventists. So dont be fat. My thinking is that, if you want to eat for longevity, small amounts of lean meat and fish is probably the way to go, like in the okinawa diet. Mediterranean diets provide alot of flavanoids via fruits and veggies and herbs, which are great anti-inflamatory agents.
Sugar and carbs can kill (e.g. insulin insensitivity, free radical damage) but there is a problem with meat as well. It seems that high sulfur intake can shorten lifespan and sulfur is in meat protein. Sulfur helps with healing and tissue growth so it might be beneficial for children, reproductive. women and people with certain illnesses to take higher levels of it. But people should lower their sulfur intake in mid-life to live a long time. This is a trade off between anabolism (big muscles and youthful vigor) and longevity. It seems you cant have both (usually) and really buff ripped guys have shorter lifespans. Addition muscle mass may be the cause that men tend to die before women. More sulfur seems to accelerate cell senescence. I see guys on here cheerleading for a very meat heavy diet and I dont think thats the way to go for longevity. It is the way to be the biggest and strongest and to burn out early— and that has its appeal for some.
I eat a handful of walnuts everyday and I take an algae based DHA/EPA supplement. I also take some flavanoids/polyphenols like turmeric, quercetin, resveretrol. I try to stay away from seed oils nowadays. I definitely use more butter than I used to and I use extra virgin olive oil raw.
Didnt we just have a post from a user who became ill from hamburger? Make your own salad and rinse it off properly. That will reduce your risk. You need some raw fruits and veggies to get certain nutrients.
