InB4 but Glocks are cheap and I love them! Yeah, they are cheap. The distinction is - are you buying the item because of the item quality / performance, or because of the price? Find the item first and then figure out how to come up with the cash, don't take short cuts.
When thinking cheap, it used to be more of the old milsurp like SKS rifles, Tokarevs, Makarovs, PA-64s, etc. They're perfectly functional and work fine. Not like any of those are particularly cheap anymore.
Nowadays there are plenty of affordable new guns like CZ or Grand Power's line of polymer pistols (can be had for under $400 if you shop around), and they're excellent. On the other extreme, I've had guns worth over $2k which did not function perfectly out of the gate.
Buddy of mine, ex-military Marine Recon bought a limited edition Kimber 1911 after he got back home from his service. He saved up for 3 years for it, and the only way that he could afford it was to use his military discount.
He took the gun to the range with me and it jammed after only a few shots and he had to take it apart at home to fix it. Wasn't even using cheap ammo, the gun was just not really broken in too well. It took a couple months of him constantly firing it every weekend to get to the point where it didn't jam at all.
Guns, especially expensive ones, aren't always tested right to see how the parts move when the gun is fired in repetition. There has to be a LOT of thought and testing put into guns to see how they move and fire under repeated stress. Most of the cheaper guns, since they're widely commercially sold, have this kind of testing done by most of the owners, and you tend to hear about it quick when the gun doesn't work right.
What’s pathetic about that whole scenario is that the 1911 platform is old and and has been knocked off more than any other handgun design all over the world, yet Kimber can’t make one that works.

I fucking knew it would be a Kimber. My Father in law had a similar experience, albeit with a less expensive model.
News flash, some people don't have a lot of cash floating around. An inexpensive gun may not necessarily the choice they would make if they had other means.
Yep. Unless you get something that breaks down or blows up in you face (which is next to impossible to find nowadays with the quality being up across the board), you're always better to get any gun you can afford than hold out for something out of your budget,IMO.
I’ve always hated the fact that alot of gun enthusiasts are cheapskates, in that they want the best deal on everything and they always over value their own stuff. I’m not driving the next town over to save $20 on a gun. I have some cheap guns because I like them and they work, such as a Glock and some revolvers. 400-500 can get you a good quality rifle or handgun all day long.

I love my 1911 colt combat commander in .9. also the Beretta 92x and a SA 1911 operator in .45. Any favorites? Steel frames have been a little harder to find. The emissary is steel but I think it looks like shit with the square trigger guard.
I have a $400 rock island 45 that works just fine. I need more range time with it, meaning, off my back porch, just to get used to the trigger. It seems to want to easily double tap .
I bought a Sig P-320 .45. It took 500 rounds to break in. My Glock 30 ran like a champ right out of the box. I have a Taurus G2 thats 6 years old with 2000K rounds through it. No fails. $200.

I'm ready for the flames. My first handgun was a Hi-Point 9mm. Had to file off the coating on the underside of the slide so it would cycle properly. Graduated to a H&K VP9 later.

First firearm I ever purchased was a HiPoint .45acp. I bought it because I was moving and had all my money tied up in the move. While it is an "alright" nightstand weapon; I won't be buying one again. That being said; MUCH better to have a HiPoint then nothing.
I was in a cabelas and saw the Ruger Security 380. Was like $300. Got it. It's pretty nice and fun to shoot. I was impressed how it's a subcompact but holds like 15+1 rounds.
You need lots of guns. Only your personal guns need to be super high quality. The rest are for trading after the zombie apocalypse. Those ones don't need to be expensive.

People get "obsessed" when they can buy a quality item for a "cheap" price.
