I do hear what you're saying and in ways I agree. The smaller companies have to diversify their offerings. They can't follow the same blueprint as the big boxes. For example, there is a clothing store near me that anything in the store is a set price for the day. Its all brand new stuff. So that pair of jeans today is $4. Very small retail footprint and they just throw the stuff in cardboard boxes with self printed signs for clothing sizes. They are absolutely thriving on this model. Doing the same idea that Big Lots does but in a smaller space with less overhead and maybe 5 total employees to manage.

The vendors in this case might take the hit. So if you make a rug for Macy's and they only sell half, you are stuck with the rest of the inventory. So you sell it to big lots and they have a lot of theft, and missing boxes, then you end up with 15% on the Macy's deal. This is why manufacturing and distribution companies go under. Works the same in small food companies.
