Sad discussion at work yesterday

Was talking with two colleagues under 30 yesterday and the topic of company celebrations (i.e. Christmas, Thanksgiving). These are pretty smart guys, hardcore Linux and firmware developers. I said that at my last job we had a fall festival because we weren't allowed to call it Thanksgiving anymore. Both guys just nodded their heads and one even said "yeah, that's understandable". I didn't say anything after that, but I was really saddened that these guys were so brainwashed into the America-bad mentality. Really saps my hope for the future.

I worked in a place before and there was no Christmas tree, decorations or mention of Christmas. Problem was, the Indian and Muslims were disappointed. They liked the celebrations. People with advanced degrees are usually the most indoctrinated and conformists. They excelled at assimilating and repeating what an authority figure like a teacher or professor taught them. They are the best at mental gymnastics to justify the failures of the system and have a comparatively easy life thanks to their high IQ. Expect no revolution from them.

On the bright side, if we manage to change the system, newer generations of academics will get feverishly convinced of the new system and be more than happy to measure skulls again. It is how it is.

Good point. I have often done this very same thing; i.e. give neutral or non committal responses to potentially contentious remarks or questions when I've been in a work or corporate environment. I would only reveal my true opinions to other co workers if and only if I was absolutely sure they were like minded. And I do mean absolutely sure. Saw many examples of people disciplined or fired over the years for running their mouths or being snitched out by going against whatever the current politically correct current thang was.
