Bought my first camper.

submitted by Portmanure to Campfire 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 20:15:30 ago (+31/-0)     (Campfire)

I’m too old to tent camp, I’m done with that. Waking up with more aches and pains than I fell asleep with. No bueno! I also despise glamping. Why? Just why? But I do want to get out there. So I bought my first camper. I’m not sure how this is going to work out. It’s a tiny little cabin on wheels. To end the suspense I bought a Nucamp 320s Boondock because I may not go far but I do want to leave the trail. I’ll report back on how this turns out.

Several years back when I was in my prepper phase (..ok, never left my prepper phase) I picked up a used popup on craigslist. Decent shape, just wanted to get a feel for it. So I pop the mother fucker up on my lot in North Central MA, abutting beaucoup state forest, good field test. I get my wife to come out and spend the night. She is settling in while I am getting half lit with molson ice and chardonnay while watching pirated episodes of Mr. Robot (i'm an it nerd and this was 2016). EVen get one of my rifles out. locked and loaded fantasizing about a black bear or coyote pack attack, lol. Fucking midnight rolls around and she finally sits up (i'm still sipping away and watching cool hacking sitcom) and say's, "that's enough. See ya." ..heads back in the house and leaves me alone with my cool prepper apocalypse fantasy, complete with wifi streamed from the house (..100' feet away), plenty of booze, my shelter mutt, laptop and rifle and ALONE (YES!) ..fun night. Hangover sucked.

Molson ice.
Fuck me.

I’m going to gather up all the crumbs in this story. Weight them and pronounce good story bro! I like it.

Get a van instead.

Not one of those fancy high tops jobs.

Just a van.

It's a self propelled metal tent and can go and park nearly anywhere.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:46:21 ago (+3/-0)

I went through many iterations of my decision. I was very close to getting an A-frame. But I don’t want to be setting something up in a rainstorm. I just want to walk back open the door plop down and relax. That led to my choice. I was looking at scamps and Casitas, light as possible was my main focus.

The metal part of the metal tent is very helpful at keeping things out.

I've long dreamt of buying something like this and traveling the country. Curious what something like this goes for. What did it set you back? 20k-30k?

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:11:44 ago (+3/-0)

$21,000 and I thought I was getting off easy.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:14:04 ago (+3/-0)

Not bad.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:27:52 ago (+2/-0)

They bought it in October of last year. The last email I got from them was they were glad they sold it to someone who would enjoy it. I promised them out of joyfulness you call me in 10 years I’ll probably still have this trailer.

[ - ] con77 4 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:18:17 ago (+4/-0)

Just Google it. Very cool
I have a silverado that would pull that.

[ - ] Lost_In_The_Thinking 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:22:03 ago (+3/-0)

That was going to be my first question ... Are you interested in teardrop trailers. And there it is! Nice looking model, looks very cozy and seems to have a lot of amenities. I'm in the same boat -- too old to sleep on the ground, but still love being outdoors. That little trailer looks like it bridges the gap. I'm a bit jealous. If I had a proper vehicle that could tow a teardrop camper, I'd get one myself.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:37:50 ago (+2/-0)

Any v6 can pull it easily. It’s pretty light. The front profile is the killer. The wind resistance is an instant 10mpg. You might be able to get it higher if you are disciplined.

[ - ] Lost_In_The_Thinking 0 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:41:59 ago (+0/-0)

That's my concern. I own two older Toyota Corollas, both great cars and decently maintained, purchased to move my butt from one place to another. I rarely have any need to carry cargo or pull another vehicle, however light. I always regretted not buying a light truck.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:07:55 ago (+2/-0)

All men should own a truck. Hell, I have two.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 08:02:49 ago (+1/-0)

Full size eight foot long bed?

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 10:53:17 ago (+0/-0)

Last one was. I don’t work like that anymore. Don’t need it. Has a lumber rack though, because trucks aren’t worth a shit without one.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:16:40 ago (+3/-0)

Looks like a great little camper. Hope you enjoy it.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 16:57:49 ago (+1/-0)

All right boys! I’m taking my trailer to Florida. From California. I’m not blogging this journey. I’m just doing it. I leave Monday. My son is gonna be shocked when I knock on his door.

[ - ] con77 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:14:28 ago (+2/-0)

I've thought about that. Need AC to much.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:34:30 ago (+2/-0)

It’s got AC! Unfortunately you got to plug in to get it to work. I’m looking at upgrading the electrical system to lithium battery’s and more solar. I couldn’t live with myself if I accepted it as is, I gotta make it better! My awning just arrived, now I have to figure out how to attach it. This is going to be fun!

does it have a toilet? i mean that would be a dealbreaker for me i(f it lacks one)since when i have to go, i have to really go.

you know, this is has been a fantasy of mine. to buy a camper and to explore the u.s with it but a good camper with all the amenities does cost alot of cash. something that i dont have. but is nice to have dreams though

enjoy!!

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 12:05:19 ago (+1/-0)

It has what I think is the best compromise in camper toilets. It’s called a cassette toilet. You use it as normal. When it gets full you remove a small rolling suitcase like box from the side of the trailer. Take it to any bathroom or dump station and empty it. The downside is I’ve heard they can smell. The solution is to treat them chemicals and always keep a bit of clean water in the bowl to help seal it. I don’t plan on using it is there for peace of mind and to keep my wife happy.

[ - ] albatrosv15 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 01:01:34 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah my father was eternal tent camper, until he bought camper on wheels. Everybody gets old.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:06:54 ago (+1/-0)

Good for you. I would like to buy a RV and travel when I retire. Until then, I’ll take my vacations in hotel rooms.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:10:08 ago (+2/-0)

That came up in my equation, how many hotel rooms can I rent for the cost of this trailer? But then I remembered I hate hotels.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:16:47 ago (+3/-0)

I just like the not having to do anything part of hotels.

Take a UV flashlight with you next time.

Don't ruin the delusion!

[ - ] Sector2 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 11:00:18 ago (+1/-0)

It's too late for me. I illuminated my bathroom and around the kitchen sink.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 11:02:14 ago (+1/-0)

Did you fix it with bleach or fire?

[ - ] Sector2 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 12:40:07 ago (+1/-0)

I turned the flashlight off and put it away. I'm going to have to scrub my walls and everything though.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 10:55:47 ago (+1/-0)

No thanks!🤣

[ - ] UrCoolerOlderBrother -2 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 00:49:36 ago (+0/-2)

What's the benefit of a UV flashlight?

[ - ] Special_Prosecutor 3 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 01:54:29 ago (+3/-0)

Finding freon and coolant leaks.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 10:13:43 ago (+0/-0)

This is the best answer on the internet.

[ - ] Sector2 2 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 02:11:42 ago (+2/-0)

In a hotel room, it will make bodily fluids and filth go florescent.

Does the same for fluids and filth in your kitchen and bathroom. And/or all the places your pet peed on the carpet.

Truck camper?

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 3 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 20:23:22 ago (+3/-0)

Trailer, I drive a Toyota Tacoma 4x4, it can barely pull itself. This trailer is about the biggest I would ever pull with a Tacoma.

https://nucamprv.com/tab-camper-2023

The Boondock model is what I purchased.

[ - ] clymer 2 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:44:04 ago (+2/-0)

i dunno bro, I towed a Kubota B7510 with a backhoe on it beaucoup miles with my tacomas (yes plural), those things are bullet proof beasts

[ - ] DukeofRaul 1 point 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 20:45:34 ago (+1/-0)

Nice. I was looking at campers they are so exoensive!

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 1 point 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 21:53:34 ago (+1/-0)

Here’s the sweet thing, I bought it from a couple who had dreams of camping, like I do. They went out once and noped it. They didn’t even de-winterized it. They slept in it one night and parked it. I happened along when they decided to sell. Keep your eyes open, there are good deals to be had.

[ - ] DukeofRaul 1 point 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:01:39 ago (+1/-0)

Bigfoot?

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 1 point 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:05:21 ago (+1/-0)

Funny you should say that. I’m planning to go camping near UFO hot spots. I flew for 41 years and never ever saw a UFO. Bigfoot sightings and UFOs seem to go hand in hand. My time is my time now, I can waste it any way I want. I want to see a UFO

(Bigfoot campers are Canadian and so well built, but so expensive, I might as well dream of an Oliver camper, lol.)

[ - ] UrCoolerOlderBrother -1 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 00:51:15 ago (+1/-2)

I hope you see one bro. I want to see one too.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 10:27:08 ago (+0/-0)

Mt Shasta is my first destination. Rumor has it there is a ufo base inside the mountain.

[ - ] UrCoolerOlderBrother 0 points 8 monthsAug 10, 2024 00:41:09 ago (+0/-0)

Nice. I've heard that before too. Good luck homie.

[ - ] NoRefunds 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 13:10:58 ago (+0/-0)

how much you get it for?

[ - ] the_old_ones 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 10:53:51 ago (+0/-0)

I also despise glamping

even the name of it is gay. they literally took going out to a cabin for the weekend, and made it sound homosexual

[ - ] Stonkmar 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 09:20:01 ago (+0/-0)

I'm looking for an old, beat up scamp. I do fiberglass work and would love to fix one up.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 1 point 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 09:51:25 ago (+1/-0)

I entertained that idea for awhile. Those scamps last forever. I noticed three problems. The door loses its shape and is hard to fix. The axles fail. The cloth surface inside is critical to comfort and needs to be replaced. Figure out those three problems and a scamp is perfect!

[ - ] Special_Prosecutor 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 02:05:52 ago (+0/-0)

Depending on your location, consider getting a hitch lock and wheel immobolizer for security.

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 0 points 9 monthsAug 2, 2024 10:16:54 ago (+0/-0)

The sellers tossed in a wheel boot for free. I went to harbor freight and bought a bulky hitch lock. My biggest fear is the HOA, I haven’t gotten a letter yet since I parked it in my driveway.

[ - ] GreenSaint 0 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 23:24:50 ago (+0/-0)

My parents have a camper they love it. They’re always going around in it. They’re taking it to Montana in a month or two. Cross country road trip with a couple friends who also have a camper. I’m super jelly. I’m so jelly you can smear me on toast. Mmmmm smear me all over the toast honey buns

[ - ] Portmanure [op] 1 point 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 23:45:40 ago (+1/-0)

On a practical note bugs are a problem. Bug screens can be added to the vents. I’ve been looking into buying some after market products for the vents.

[ - ] GrayDragon 0 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:55:22 ago (+0/-0)

I should get a camper.

[ - ] Endo_Aryan 0 points 9 monthsAug 1, 2024 22:28:22 ago (+0/-0)

That looks fun. I know a single guy who traveled and lived in something similar for almost a year. He liked it. I also like the fiberglass ones like Scamp and Casita, but our family is too large for that now so my goal is to get a pop-up.
