I was on war craft 2 when it was dial up and their was a separate thing to find games.
I also played icefrogs Dota when you had to download a map for an update and put it in a special folder to even play. I was probably part of the first 1000 people that played Dota that evolved into a game that sold for hundreds of millions of dollars...
League of legends came from that which sold for 350 million I think
WoW sucked when it released in 2005. It was a mediocre mmo from the start. Somehow it got crazy popular and ruined the mmo genre. It could have been a great game with a few drastic tweaks. Instead every update made it worse. I played from 2006 to about 2010 due to friends dragging me in. I have some fond memories of it. But it could have been so much better.
Yeah. Horde side wasn't even finished, they barely continued the story, PvP was a joke, there was no end game, and they had the game in closed beta so long there were already fully formed guilds of people who had been playing for over a year prior to release.
WoW got popular because it was the first decent attempt at a "fast food" MMO and it had a very well known IP attached to it.
Prior to WoW, MMOs were much more hardcore and required a significant time investment. My first DAOC character took 27 days playtime just to hit max level.

I bought WoW on launch day. Only played a few months because it was pathetically easy after playing old school EQ.
