They lied. One example - 2 weeks to flatten the curve. (Which lasted a year and a half.)
Now, they can try to claim that their lies were "noble lies". That they lied in order to get people to do the "right thing". Noble lies or malicious lies, either way, they can't deny that they lied.
The Boy Who Cried Wolf - The moral of the story is that if you lie too many times, no one will believe you when you do tell the truth.
People aren't anti-science, conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers, or stupid. They're just people who have been lied to too many times.
If in the story, they took the boy behind the woodshed and gave him a beating for lying - Then when there really was a wolf, everyone would believe him because they'd know that the boy wouldn't ever risk getting another beating.
That's what needs to happen to all of the politicians, medical "experts", and media. They need to get a punishment so harsh that if a real pandemic happens, everyone believes them because we all know that they won't risk getting another punishment for lying.
