I recall there are only a couple or few lakes like that in the world. Something about CO2 getting supersaturated in the deep water (temp related?), then a triggering event disturbs the concentration and it rises to the surface. Acts like a low lying fog but invisible and displaces the oxygen.
Climbing a tree or on top of a house might have saved some of them.
