Stewpid column, thank God she recanted the exploding bird comment.
"A few months after Eppie Lederer took over as Ann Landers, her twin sister Pauline Esther "PoPo" Phillips introduced a similar, competing column, Dear Abby, using the pseudonym "Abigail Van Buren", which produced a lengthy estrangement between the two sisters.Phillips wrote her column until retiring in 2002, at which time her daughter, Jeanne Phillips, took over."
Yip, birds will not actually die from chewing gum, maybe peck at it and then move on.
This image is said to show a swallow that didn't want to leave it's mate after being hit by a car and then died. :(
Humans lacking effective, straightforward communication certainly causes more harm then gum on the floor.
Spreading untruths or people not sharing the whole truth all make for a sick society.

One day the column banned the readers from throwing rice at their weddings. She said it made the birds explode.
Women believed that hard. They tsked and peer pressured each other out of throwing rice at their weddings.
Sort of like the opposite of the social scientists in China saying to kill the birds because they eat the rice.
