The reality is that the gospels are competing. Their authors were competing and each had their own motivations.

At the end of the day (Good Friday to be specific), we see Jesus forgiving the people who are murdering him. This leads me to think that all mention of swords in other contexts are symbolic. Jesus was, to me, unmistakably pacifistic. As an apocalypticist, he is telling people to forget normal social categories. Leave your jobs. Forget family ties. The Kingdom of God is near, and that's the end of things. It's an all-or-nothing abandonment of the existing social order for what is coming instead, together with a complete inversion of the moral order, i.e., the poor will turn out to be the rich, and the weak will turn out to be the strong. . .not because they will gird themselves and rise up, but because God will ensure this justice is done.

I spent many years as a Christian, until I realized that the 'divide' you spoke about wasn't referred to by Jesus as a divide between the good and the wicked, but was instead a cultural motif, dividing the jews who would assimilate into the Hellenistic world from the jewish zealots who were waging a suicidal war against Rome. Jesus was about unifying and saving a jewish remnant in Rome without totally losing their identity.

Christianity is a literary-mythological software that makes a population pliable to change, to transition, to assimilation. Identity maintained 'in Christ' means ethnonational identities can shift any which way. I can uproot your social group and plant you on the moon, but as long as you are identified in Christ, then you can eat moon dust and be happy.
