Haven't seen that leafy character since my brief return to saidit ended abruptly upon discovering a new and even more retarded tranny was the new admin.
Yes, there are tons of cool chess variations possible. Played a wargame variant way back, set on a wargame map with terrain features. My half-baked plan was a slightly more explicitly military unit version of chess, with the playing field being a hex map on a 3D icosahedron. (built a 2.5 foot dia. prototype) Pieces would be magnetic, as this was before computers.
Your set of chess/military units would operate as a team with limited movement range, while having chess type movement abilities. The knights/helicopters having a range instead of simply up one and over two, and carrying a couple pawns/soldiers or one bishop/missile unit. Anyway, fun stuff.
Are you actually going to build it? What engine or framework would you use? I love when someone has a passionate vision for a game. I've become adept at using the Unity game engine, I feel like I could build anything I set my mind to. At the same time I feel like my creativity has been drained. I know all the little intricacies it would take to build something.. and I get wrapped up in all that before being able to expand the idea. People hate on "ideas guys" (not saying you are) but I feel like I could benefit from working with one if we were both as passionate about an idea.

Most likely not, but it will be in my back pocket like many projects.
I hate on "idea guys" too. The problem is that I'm not just an idea guy, and once you get enough real projects going you basically can only be an "idea guy" for the remaining 90% of things you want to think about.
Yeah. I might actually work on this if I have another person working on it with me. I don't really know unity and have only ever made graphical games with lower level code, which is not the way to go. If we did partner up on it I'd call dibs on doing the logic side.
The question is would we go web based make a desktop application? One is better for steam. The other is better to link to. It would need to be multiplayer in any case.

I think my issue is I am a horrible game designer. I am good at coding, thinking up solutions to problems, and debugging. But when it comes to actually creating a fun and engaging games I struggle.

I'd love to team up with someone on a game project. But I am not a huge chess fan. I respect the game though. Chess is already a game which requires a lot of strategy. Adding more complexities to it implodes my mind. However I don't believe this would be too difficult to put together using Unity. I have a very handy grid system coded in c# which would be perfect for this type of game, it would save you a lot of time and frustration. If you're interested I'll send it over.

A browser game has a better chance of going viral, no question. You can compile web builds with Unity as well. Some games do both. Get attention from the web build while the main entree is on steam.
I hate being a cheerleader for Unity. The company is very questionable... but the engine itself is a work of genius. Having the ability to do whatever you what, easily, in a 3d sandbox is pretty cool.
