Western ghosts compared to Asian ghosts

submitted by JamesMadison to whatever 11 monthsJul 9, 2024 13:03:37 ago (+1/-0)     (whatever)

For years I've had questions about why the ghost lore of Europe/North America portrays ghosts in a very differnt way than Asian ghost lore portrays their spooks.

Western ghosts rarely are supposed to be able to hurt and touch the living. Asian ghosts can mimic the living and create complicated situations. Japanese ghosts are quite dangerous. As a rule Asian funerals aim to soothe the spirit of the deceased and get it to move on to the next world and leave its family alone.

The cultures are just different in that sense.

In the movie The Ring the evil girl is just evil and will destroy you.

Whereas in Western society the character would be redeemable.

It's the idea of Christian redemption.

Maybe because ghosts don't exist and each culture was trying to explain irrational fears and what happens when people die.

Ghost denier

I have been called worse. Slept in an allegedly haunted house once as a dare. Even as a staunch denier, it was still psychologically unsettling. I ended up just sitting around waiting for someone to come and drag chairs around with fishing line or slam some doors.

Nothing ended up happening.
