How I measure Inflation

Back in 2018, my colleague introduced me to the Stok brand of Cold Brew coffee. It was a very smooth option available from Aldi in a large jug nicely priced at $2.95 or so.

After Biden took office, the price of this product has gone up to nearly $6.

When do prices return to normal?

Prices will never return to old levels. If the government stays out of it and reduces its spending, prices should only increase a bit (or more than a bit) more, then stabilize while wages slowly creep up to roughly the same percentage increase.

You know the government will never stay out of it, though.

Inflation is the basic formula for Communism.

Before inflation:
- Low Pay: $10/hour
- Medium Pay: $30/hour

After enough inflation:
- Low Pay is bumped up to: $25/hour (as we are already seeing)
- Medium Pay: $35/hour

Final form:
- Low Pay: $40/hour
- Medium Pay: $40/hour
- Carton of eggs: $40

Prices never return to ‘normal’. The only way inflation can be reversed is via deflation and that’s far more devastating for an economy because once you get caught in a deflationary spiral (almost inevitable once it starts) production will shut down. People won’t buy a €60k car today if they think/know it will be €50k new in a year’s time, so people begin to only spend on essentials and keep putting off all other purchases. This reduces demand massively which then reduces supply, so nobody produces anything beyond the essentials.

1) Inflation has not reduced. It's still as high.
2) Even if inflation reduces, that doesn't mean prices go down. Reduced inflation means prices will be raising slower.
3) Prices will never go down until we have deflation, which will not happen in our lives.

I measure it by meat. Pork chops are still $3.59, with various beef at $4.99 to $6.59.

Packaged drinks and processed foods are going to reflect the cost of the labor and corporate market forces. Those walmart comparisons were for a basket of garbage foods - Sodas and "food" in boxes.

$1.99 ground beef kept me healthy in the 2000s. Would combine sour cream, shredded cheese, and avocado. This slop would keep you lean full for 24 hours for just under $10.

The currency you mentioned ($USD) is a debt-based fiat currency. This means that more currency must be continuously created, thereby reducing the purchasing power of existing currency in circulation. Think of it this way- You and the rest of the goats used to use gold (for large purchases) and silver (for smaller purchases) as a means to buy and sell things to each other. A perpetually expanding money supply had the inescapable effect of perpetually reducing the purchasing power of the money that is being continuously created.

Did not mention treasury / bond markets, M2, fractional reserve banking, etc. to keep things simple, but you get the idea
