If you've ever made crack out of blow or cooked up a batch of meth in a church basement then consider yourself half way to being a qualified climate scientist...boil up some nitro glycerine and you're a candidate for a Nobel Prize...oh yeah, one more thing, you'll need to have the ability to count to ten.
I don't know how he did it, but my dad could get some soil right quickly with his knowledge of chemicals/chemistry. He knew what soil would need without testing kits. I have no idea if he ever studied chemistry, but he never went to college. He got a horticulture degree from a community college for shits and giggles but knew how to farm before that.
If you want to take classes, go to a local community college and take night courses.

There are free online courses or paid
https://www.udemy.com/courses/search/?q=chemistry
Mostly you'd just use the top right and top left of the periodic table
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_table
High school chemistry sucks unless you are in the super advanced class, them you do some cool stuff.
