I have a chance of getting dual citizenship with Italy. I figure, if there's a draft coming, I'd like to be able to dip out (have kids). Or, is it looked at more like betraying one's own country and all that? Opinions?
Oh boy, that would make one eligible for that as well. Can you imagine getting called up for mandatory military service, complete it. Go to the US for a visit and then get drafted!
At least he can pick and choose. That might be a choice between 60% death and 95% death.
I know a Ukranian who has successfully dodged the war in the US. It's not like they really track people down.
Though no citizenship is where it is really at. Alexander Grothendeik, father of category theory, spent most of his like stateless. He was German but in the war his records were destroyed. He was in France and they were letting people grandfather in but declined. Then there was a draft for the Algerian war so he went to the US. Then he didn't become a citizen to avoid the Vietnam war. Smart man He only became a US citizen toward the end of his life, maybe not coincidentally when he went mad. Toward the end he thought that the devil was responsible for the speed of light not being a perfectly round number to three sig-fig in M/s.
Greetings fellow Americans :-D So... I am a dual citizen of the US and France. There are a lot of advantages to being a dual national, and some disadvantages. If you ever need to ditch where you are living for whatever reason, war, economic reasons, migrant invasion, you always have somewhere else you can legally live with no problems. Like to travel international? When the plane lands you have your pick of which customs line you want to go through. One is always much MUCH shorter than the other. It can be a big help flirting, I've bagged more than one girl cause she thought my being American or French depending on where I was was hot. If you immerse in the culture of your second nation there are many additional advantages. Learning cuisine, customs, language are all great for expanding your mind. Whenever I need a second opinion on something, I just think in the language I hadn't been thinking in and just on that alone I can come to different conclusions or see things in a different way. Living abroad will give you a completely new view of what the world is and people are.
Disadvantages include always being seen as an outsider. I was never an American when I lived in the US. People would always refer to me as Frenchy even though I was born and raised in the US and had spent most of my life there. In France, even today having lived more than half my life here, being completely immersed in the culture, having no discernable accent when I speak, people still call me the American. Its like being a perpetual outsider. I am technically supposed to file taxes in both countries, though I don't earn enough to pay in the US on top of what I pay here. Though I am too old now to be drafted, I could have been required by either nation or even both to serve in the armed forces. One major problem I currently face as a dual national is due to the FATCA treaty Obama gifted us. As a result, it is nearly impossible for me, or my sisters for that matter, to obtain a home loan or any other type of major bank loan. There aree ways around this, but they are complicated and costly. My current plan is to continue saving while the housing market corrects so I can bring a sufficient down payment to get access to a service that many people in my case are using, but its gonna take a bit still before I set aside enough for that.
These are just examples of pros and cons, there are many more of each.
As far as betrayal, on the contrary, I am very patriotic to both of my countries, but even more so to the nations of pêople to which I belong.
If you have questions feel free to ask. I'll get around to answering when I can.

I'm in France for now. Not planning on leaving though the wife keeps trying to talk me into it. Its not a standard down payment that I need though I need to come up with nearly half the asking price for what I want to buy. With inflated prices its pretty retarded. I'm also waiting out the market. Prices have been on the way down for nearly a year and have a long way to go still.
Me too, FrancoAmerican, also nick named French or Frenchy, lived in France 4 years plus many many summer vacations. You couldn't have a better dual nationality , ( I'm biased) because of the food alone! It's great to speak two languages, pas vrai ? I was living in the US during the age fir French mandatory conscription. I had to prove that, which wasn't too difficult. The french are the absolute kings of paperwork Holy cow, so many papers
Being a Frenchy, you should know that Ste. Maarten in the Caribbean ,which is French, the inhabitants were able to vote in a referendum and voted against property taxes ! There are no property taxes there and I'm sure theyll never vote FOR reinstating them.
If you can, go get it. Italian means Europe. This means you can use it to just visit any country in Europe and have no problems it all with any paperwork, visa, even in some emergency you will have a lot of rights.. Maybe you will never use it, fine. But if you can get it, do it.
I can get citizenship in Colombia if I want it. It's our bug out plan if shit's looking like it's gonna go sideways. I have in-laws there with a bunch of land, cattle, horses, and a river running through the property.
That said, it's looking like Colombia is leaning towards socialism and there's still paramilitarios in the mountains.
There's a book by Stan Brock, Jungle Cowboy about his experience leaving Britian and going to British Guiana to work on a cattle ranch. It's a great read and sounded like a great life down there.
At one point, I still believed in the Republic. The Republic has fallen and we are a twisting, vomiting, corpse of the great nation that we had onve been. In the next 50 years I expect we will see a war on our home soil and a dissolution of our constitution. Your job is to lead, take care of your family and yourself.
I would. The US is like a house on fire with construction workers hanging up drywall in part of the house that is already burned to cover the fire damage. I have looked into those "buy citizenship" and those are out of reach for the most part. If you can do it, fucking do it. Especially if that Italian passport can get you into another country away from this shithole.
Are you serious? America is a playground. Of course I would love a dual citizenship just like every jew. Must be nice knowing you can fuck up your place you live and go back home as a fall back.
Wish I could say Russia as I have some Russian heritage and I’ve been there and it’s actually a pretty cool place and the people are oddly nice, but there’s too much sketchyness going on with Russia right now.
A friend said Thailand but I’m not sure I could stand that and it’s really close to China.

I think South America is likely the best bet.
