Boxing is a gentleman's sport. Good for a workout and decent to have in the repertoire but not good if that's all you got. A wrestler could easily grab you up. Then your boxing means nothing.
Tend to agree from my limited knowledge (film about top fighters from various disciplines pitted against each other - the wrestler was the last man standing!).
Boxing basics will help you learn to properly throw a punch with power, and specifically how to avoid-block punches coming at you. But people rarely trade blows in a boxing style fight outside of a ring.
My suggestion is learn the basics of boxing, and then begin seriously learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It is the type of all around fighting you can expect to encounter everywhere.

You will learn to defend yourself while standing, grappling, and wrestling from it.
