That's nice of them to growl like that. Makes it more likely you'll hear them before stepping on them in tall grass or some shit.

I've almost had rattlesnakes bite me three times, it was only their rattling that revealed them to me and probably saved me a lot of pain and potentially my life. Sneks don't like us, but they're not aggressive, generally- they just want you to leave them alone. I can sympathize.

Not only do they growl, but they can also wrap themselves around a tree and bark.
