Not at first. It was traditional to issue a warning, by leaving a frag, pin still in, in their boot first. They wake up, go to put their boots on, message delivered.
That would usually be sufficient to convince any but the very stupidest 2Lt that the troops were unhappy with his duty performance and he needed to get his shit all into one bag and wired tight, most rikky-tick. Usually, if said officer approached his chain of command and informed them of this in a timely manner, they'd try to get him switched out asap.
Fragging was something that happened in the rear. Usually as a last resort by a unit that had collectively lost faith in their officers's ability to not be stupid and not be able to get rid of him any other way. You didn't frag them out in the bush, because 1) you give charlie a chance to solve your problem for you, and 2) you're gonna need every gun in a gunfight. Teamwork is important because it gives charlie more people to shoot at besides just you.
The smart commander knew how to make sure that rolled grenade would not only kill you too but everyone else around him. Sad but that’s the reality of war.
I was talking about the smart COs not the good ones. The good ones would lead their command and not fail their soldiers. Die first if they had too. Vietnam had a lot of officers showing up to get their officer merit badges. The grunts could see it, they had to be there. A rolled hand grenade into a tent of an officer who was going to order you to die tomorrow to get his merit badge? I can forgive that.
Vietnam in general isn't really taught in school. It's America's red headed step child of a war. It was also common for soldiers to be wasted while out on patrol. Booze, weed, and heroin being the most popular substances of choice.
Not that common. Not nearly as common as the judenpresse would like for you to believe. Depends a lot on the unit.
Even in units where weed was known to be used back in the rear, everybody knew that using in the field was stupid and endangered everyone around you.
The high humidity and barometric pressure cause sounds and smells to carry a lot further than you think in the jungle. And weed makes you stupid. Nobody gets stoned before going into a gunfight. Not if your primary goal is the same as everyone around you, to just do your time and go home alive. Because in the end, everyone is absolutely dependent on everyone else being on their A game to make it.
If you think anybody else is going to risk getting greased in the bush because you got stupid and blazed up in the patrol base is an excellent way to get YOURSELF fragged.
And the main users of hard stuff like heroin were mainly support troops who never left the wire. In other words, niggers.

After my grandfather on my mothers side passed away maybe 30 years ago, (he was an avid book/ magazine collector) i inherited this full set of 'NAm' magazines in a hard cover folder. Iirc, they were published in the late 80's, but covered all the different aspects of life and combat over there. It is a literal treasure trove of uncensored color photos - showing virtually all aspects of army life over there during 1965-75, behind the wire, down time, patrols, tunnel rates, fire bases and fire fights etc - they didnt nix on not showing dead bodies, or even field interrogations - i remember images old lady villager with a M16 jabbed hard in her temple and being pulled around by her hair, even that well known clip of the gook shot by the Viet-officer or whatever, water boardings in a village barrel - nowdays i doubt they would publish such 'graphic real life stuff' in a normie magazine for general sale. One of the magazines delved into GI drug use, and i recall a photo of a US Gi wearing john lennon styled dark glasses with his sleeve pulled up showing off his fresh track marks all along the inside of his arm, one of the magazines was about fragging as well and another about black and whites race relations and races self-segregating when not out on patrol... I should go dig them all up out of storage.. I read those things a hundred times as a teenager.
Same reason antifa doesn't tell people they are trying to recruit how many times they've been stabbed, or shot for attacking essentially random innocent people.
Vietnam is retconned. I'm a public school millennial and we never talked about it. Same with ww2. We spent my entire school life on the civil War and that's it. I think we watched Gettysburg like every year
Watching a movie activates the same parts of the brain as witnessing an actual event. The jews have known it for a long time. That's why they went all-in taking over Hollywood.
You know what is legally considered "BASED ON A TRUE STORY"? ...a fucking Lie.
None of the Nam is taught anywhere. Those of us who served in that shithole don't want to talk, and we were shit to everyone when we came back, regardless what service. Our missions, whatever they were, were classified. Our whereabouts (mine, at least) was hidden, as were our aircraft (helos). We knew, at least most of us knew, Nam was a bullshit thing for LBJ and his great society, to hide it. We knew we weren't supposed to win. Many who tried, died because of that. "They" tried to kill my group by sending us to the Hanoi Hilton for a 'rescue' (twice), then pulled support so we were alone in Hanoi's airspace. Classified. Neither attempt was successful either way: the Hilton was unoccupied, and we got out, both helos, both times. Stupid officers kill men. That's why the frag. Smart officers don't last in the mil, or don't make rank.
Being that over a thousand solders figured it out on their own, why would you need to teach them? Don't you just toss a grenade into their tent? Come on, bro. Get your shit together.
