How many thought 1984 by George Orwell was satire?

submitted by Conspirologist to AskUpgoat 10 monthsJun 24, 2024 07:43:52 ago (+7/-1)     (AskUpgoat)

When I was young, I thought 1984 was just satire, because the elite can't be this crazy, and people can't be this stupid. Now, when I see that it's all true, I may experience hysterical laughter because of decay and hopelessness.

What about you?

I always thought it was the future. Remember supposedly he wrote it when it was in existence in the Soviet Union at the time he wrote it.

Nobody. That shit was dead serious.

"Idiocracy", otoh, I did think was satire. At first.

Over time I realized it was both warning and prophecy. Not so funny now.

At the time I thought Orwell was deliberately exaggerating the level of human stupidity to impossible levels to make sure the readers got the message. I thought real people could never be this manipulatable.

Then I saw covid happen with my own eyes.
Now, if anything I think he undershot the mark.

People really are infinitely malleable, for good or ill.

I created this meme. When people mentioned brave new world I thought this is a perfect place for it. I can only post it with an imbb link

The silver linnings of 9/11 and covid1984 is that they were so fucking stupid and impossible it woke people up.

But I am still amazed how stupid people were during covid1984 they are either npcs and we are in the matrix or they are fucking so stupid it's hard to imagine

I read it and thought this could never happen, because it's happened before, and also, we have a government that would protect us from it. But I also thought Hitler was the bad guy and jews were our greatest ally.

Anyone who's hope is in this world is gonna be let down. Jesus warned us about the jews and their synagogue of satan.

He told us how it would end, they will completely win to such an extreme that will only be interrupted by His return.

I never read Orwell as a kid. However, as an adult, reading into his life before reading his work I can't help thinking that he was a very dumb idealistic man who made a series of catastrophically poor long term decisions. He clearly wanted to be part of a revolution, but never pursued learning skills which would enable him to be of use beyond unskilled labor in it. Imagine what he could've done if he arrived in Spain as an engineer, or mechanic, instead of a writer and soldier. Hell, even being knowledgeable in the most up to date farming methods could've been invaluable to have as well.

I always read it as a warning. Even when I was younger, there was signs. Now as I’ve gotten older, I believe it is a road map. Because we certainly are right on it.

There's certainly a healthy bit of Brave New World sprinkled in. Lots of people on legal, reality-ignoring drugs. An IVF industry barreling toward GATTACA levels (to mix in another dystopia) of baby shopping. Degenerate sex no longer shunned but outright celebrated while the Bernard Marxes and John the Savages of the world question the validity of life without meaningful relationships with one another and the truth.

Reawakening the angsty teenager in me... not a great way to start the week.

Indeed, not a good image to wake up to. As I just start into my quiet part of my life and relax, play with the grandkids. Instead I think we are soon going to be in the fight of our life,

There's gunna be some hard hairy work. There's going to be more shooting, more people are going to die. -Gunnery Sargent, Bob Lee Swagger,
