A clock I scored from my dead neighbor

The house got gutted today. We were helpful over the years and toward the end and her family recognized that so the family offered us last picking. I also took a small tv and some shovels. A lot of people these days are simultaneously anti-horder and pro-consumer. So they want to take nothing from the prior generation. The new philosophy when someone passes is toss everything. Don't even look at it. I think differently. I think there are at least a handful of virtues in doing the opposite. I think practical goods are practical goods and shouldn't be thrown out. Some of you may also know that I am a work and spend minimalist due to my objections to our monetary system. If it means I can avoid buying something in the future even if I have the money to buy it then that much less spend is to me its own good. Third I think it is good to have items in your practical every day use from which you can remember people.. even beyond just your own family. I even think it is better to be something you use then something thrown in a book somewhere to confuse the next generation when you die and they clean out your stuff. For example that tv that I may turn into my computer monitor, I'll use it every day and can just remember that she existed, that she had a life. I don't have the same memories of her that a family member would have but I think that is at least something.

Throw out useless stuff. Don't throw out useful stuff. Don't we want a world with an in-scarcity of useful things. A lot of these things if built right can last multiple lifetimes. Then these items have stories too.

If you want to sell it? You know I want it.

That's nice. Put it at the entrance to your home so that when people enter its the first thing they see. I would.

If my grandma had something that based I would keep it. Almost all of it was useless old junk.

nice, would love something like that to hang on my wall. wait, does the clock really works?

i mean its fine as decorative memento of sorts but if the clock works that would be an added bonus

Nice . I do the same. I pick up old Christmas stuff as well . Not because of Christ but because joy hopefully was had . I have strangers stuff hanging on my tree.Ghost ornaments. Just a weird quirk. I feel the same about old cars. I look at them wonder what happened in them , how many kids conceived in the back seat , what road trips etc etc

My grandma has been giving away her stuff, I scored two beautiful coloured glass ashtrays a pink and a blue. I don't think they were ever used as ash trays though. One was used for coins and keys and that's what I'm using the bigger pink one for (it replaces a small cheap, plain clear glass kitchen bowl that previously had the job) and the blue one is taking the role of a temporary dumping ground for my jewellery when I just want to take it off at night and can't be bothered putting it in the jewellery box right away. I love them both. Nobody else wanted them apparently but they were my top picks. They are beautiful pieces of art and obviously quality made although they have no markings I bet they were expensive. Real coloured glass, not painted. There was a third bowl (not ash tray) clearly by a different maker and older with a chipped bottom, I kind of want it but it might be uranium glass so I have left it for now. Need to get a UV light to check.

My kid's also scored the "kings goblet" which is just a cup not a goblet but is covered in oval and round lumps painted different colours to look like jewels. It was always on a Hugh shelf but on close inspection it looks like it may have come from a dollar store. My kid's love using it - I was never allowed to probably because even with careful washing the paint is coming off. When it comes off all the way though I will find some glass paint and redo it.

Conceptually interesting, but ugly as shit.

I just set up the TV as a monitor. 720p. Fuck old people's shit. Throw it in the trash.
