Had it happen a few times...one time in Jamaica I had to head out of MO Bay for a direct AC flight back to Kanastan, I specifically requested direct with no stops, doesn't the fucking pilot come over the mic informing the few dozen passengers that it was just requested for them to route to Kingston, I'm fucking pissed and I let the crew know that I was pissed, I got a $50.00 voucher for the Keg Steak House, big fucking deal...the plane lands, shuts down in an out of the way area, seemed strange, and nobody can disembark...a tractor and lorie pull up with 2 large crates but no forklift following, I couldn't see the activity but there was a fuck of a lot of mumble jumble and banging around and then I could hear the ramp retracting and hatches closing...the pilot tells everyone to buckle up...two engines start up, 1 is smoking and won't catch and the other is dead...mechanics had to be flown in from Miami, 4 hrs later, 96°F they're firing up the engines and they are using an air assist unit to blast the turbines, rough start on the replacement and the other one is still smoking heavy...we sat for another half hr with those engines roaring, eventually the smoke clears...later I was told that it was water seepage causing the vapor, it wasn't smoke...I know nothing about turbine engines but I was told that in the combustion process there's a liquid atomizer that proportions the mist in with the fuel to create a more internally explosive mixture and that once those engines are peaking out they're not consuming all that much fuel due to the engine fins and venturi design, apparently they are compressing the air as it streams through the engine body to the exhaust...either way being stuck on a plane with no air conditioning really sucks.
