I'm a badass swimmer, and those waves terrify me. Fuck that. The guy was foolish to try and go after her, attempting to jump over 9-foot-tall waves.
When I was training to become cave diving certified, there was a sort of unspoken rule among the diving community: "I'm going home today." Meaning, if you fuck up and get tangled up and lost or some shit, unless saving you is trivially easy, they will abandon your ass, because trying to rescue you will likely result in both of you drowning to death. This applies to any dangerous waters.

Yeah same, very badass swimmer. Went to Nassau when the red flags were up. I got hit by a literal 3 foot wave when I was walking in. Threw me into the sand, my knees, chest and elbows were scraped up, same with my wife but she was still a few steps behind me. Nigger lifeguard came running after us, saying red flag red flag. I said, ahhh that's what that's for. We went to the pool instead.

Just an FYI if you're ever visiting, this is also an issue pretty much everywhere on the Oregon coast, and you're given far less warning by the water.
