I remember going through this several years ago. The details are foggy, but I remember it being absolutely fucking ridiculous to cancel the subscription. Fucking SaaS. I am not employed as a creative, so my needs are minimal and I don't give a fuck about industry standards. I typically use Sketchpad or Canva. I've heard Gimp is good, with a lot more functionality than the retard alternatives I just mentioned.

GIMP has decent editing tools but for digital illustration, Krita is the best open source solution. I use both.
