This is one of those things that comes from an inspired, scientific perspective but is completely bastardized by stupidity. The original intention is to use the stem cells for some possible health benefits. But eating them destroys them in your stomach. The mother already got all the benefits from the stem cells because her circulatory system was connected to the babies the whole time. Studies have shown that pregnant women who suffered heart attacks during child birth recovered significantly faster and further studies showed fetal stem cells in the mothers blood stream.
But consuming the placenta will not, can not, get those stem cells into your circulatory system.
I'm sure they saw mammals in nature doing it so thought it might be a good idea, too. Has Iron and shit. I dunno why Doula's recommend it, actually. Maybe its just $$.
My point was that it's more common than Op thinks, amongst home birth parents. It's not like they're rolling it into raw sushi and consuming it with chop sticks.
