There is a whole range of self defense responses, from pushing someone away from you to lethal force. One of the elements for self defense is that it has to be a reasonably proportional response to a reasonable apprehension of some type of harm.
Lethal force in self defense requires both an objective and subjective reasonable belief that you are in imminent/immediate (depends on the jurisdiction) danger of serious bodily harm or death. Serious bodily harm generally encompasses things like lost organs, loss of some type of bodily function, or loss of limb.
Shooting someone is almost always not a proportional response to someone punching you. the only thing that might change this is if a linebacker was wailing on a grandma. But these are two grown adult men.

I will tell you that him checking his gun before they even got close is not good, and the fact he kept shooting while he was already down AND he moved up to shoot him in the head is going to bury him. He absolutely intended to kill him when he started shooting. Which is fine to do, as long as you have an appropriate justification for doing it. This guy does not.
That's not even close to what the law says. The law says that it is not objectively reasonable to believe that a punch will kill a person to such a high degree of certainty that it is justifiable for a person to lose their life for throwing one.
It's not super obvious on the first few runs but these two people on their property. They are not "agressing" in to other people's property.
The guy who shoots appears to make it very clear over an over "stay on your property". When the red shirt guy steps over, take a look, the guy with gun makes a very clear look at the feet to make sure "hey you definitely just fucking cleared over to my property". - He initiated the confrontation by going out to them.
- He prepped his gun prior to walking TOWARDS the UNARMED victim, and NOT away.
- He made no attempt to retreat, or even warn the UNARMED victim.
- He shot, and then continued to mag-dump on the UNARMED victim after he had fallen to the ground.
Even if the 1st shot could be justified as defense, the mag-dump on a passive victim can't be.
It is 100% cold blooded murder, and it could be argued that he prepared for it by checking his gun 13seconds prior to the UNARMED victim even coming out of his house.

- Fire one shot.
- Recognize the victim is down.
- Keep the firearm trained on the victim and warn him NOT to move until Police arrive.
- Tell the wife to retreat into the house for her safety, and call the Police.
That is what someone actually defending themselves, and others would do.

There is a whole range of self defense responses, from pushing someone away from you to lethal force. One of the elements for self defense is that it has to be a reasonably proportional response to a reasonable apprehension of some type of harm.
Lethal force in self defense requires both an objective and subjective reasonable belief that you are in imminent/immediate (depends on the jurisdiction) danger of serious bodily harm or death. Serious bodily harm generally encompasses things like lost organs, loss of some type of bodily function, or loss of limb.
Shooting someone is almost always not a proportional response to someone punching you. the only thing that might change this is if a linebacker was wailing on a grandma. But these are two grown adult men.
There's a 0% chance that this is legally valid self defense, and the shooter should probably be convicted of first degree murder. 2nd degree at the very best, but I put his odds at 95/5 that it's first degree.

First degree murder requires deliberation and premeditation. This can happen over a fairly short period of time. It just means that the defendant developed the intent to kill before the act of killing and not in a heat of passion. I will tell you that him checking his gun before they even got close is not good, and the fact he kept shooting while he was already down AND he moved up to shoot him in the head is going to bury him. He absolutely intended to kill him when he started shooting. Which is fine to do, as long as you have an appropriate justification for doing it. This guy does not.
