It's not something a boomer like you will appreciate or understand ;)

Laughably basic.

I fucking love this band, but god damn their fan base is cringey (except for me, and maybe Dangus). I've seen so many TikToks of mascara fags lipsyncing the lyrics to "Take Me Back to Eden" that I've developed spinal curvature.

The only good camera angle for drummers is top-down. That's it. All other angles are a waste of time. Top-down, or gtfo.

This is cool. And I like the music.

But for an overqualified drummer, check this out:

(Watch to at least a minute in...)

Yeah but does he have a song as recognized throughout the world as Hot For Teacher?

Inb4 gayfaggin starts crowing about Niel Peart.

He's a damn fine drummer, I'll give ya that. Damn fine. I don't really care for the genre of music though, sounds like a dollar store version of A Perfect Circle. What do I know, though? I listen to bluegrass, and drums aren't generally considered part of a bluegrass ensemble.

I don't know if you like jazz drummers, but Buddy Rich is widely considered to be one of the GOATs.

I've never been all that impressed by guys like Buddy Rich. Sure it's fun to noodle around in jazz sessions, actually writing a groove for a song is way more difficult.

Fair enough, ya like what ya like. It does sound a little unhinged at points, and I'm not hipster enough to say that you just don't get it. I'm impressed with the sheer speed that he was able to pull off, but it doesn't work anywhere outside of a jazz solo.

but it doesn't work anywhere outside of a jazz solo

Obviously false from the song and the band's reception.

Ain't talking about ya boy you posted about, I'm talking about Buddy Rich. I think that shit's even out of place in prog rock, it's just unnecessary, impressive as it may be.

I wouldn't call myself a drummer, I had 7pc kit for several years which was super fun, but I'm not proficient. I am really good at listening to music and isolating the parts though. Guys like Buddy Rich and Neil Peart were jazz drummers at heart, Neil Peart came in third behind Rich in a jazz drumming competition. It doesn't translate to rock or metal though.

Lol ok. We'll leave it at that.

Reminiscent of Danny Carey in a way. Very clean 👌🏼

Was he burned with acid or something?

[ - ] heebiejeebies 0 points 11 monthsJun 4, 2024 10:07:44 ago (+0/-0)

I've tried to listen to sleep token several times, and I just don't "get it". I can concede their sound is very technically proficient, which is itself an accomplishment, but it just doesn't capture me emotionally.

Maybe live experience would be a different story?

[ - ] big_fat_dangus [op] 1 point 11 monthsJun 4, 2024 10:22:07 ago (+1/-0)

For me the appeal is it's just very authentic. The singer sings in his natural brit accent instead of americanizing it. He swings for the fences and hits the high notes in "The Summoning" in a way that would be very cringe for a less proficient singer to do. II the drummer doesn't fall into mid tier rock drumming, instead brings creativity and intensity into the mix in a way that's very satisfying to hear.

They do have a bit of that supergroup (from what I remember that's what they are) awkwardness to their sound, maybe that's what's offputting to your listen.
