Merthiolate is a mercury-containing substance that was once widely used as germ-killer and a preservative in many different products, including vaccines. Merthiolate poisoning occurs when large amounts of the substance are swallowed or come in contact with your skin.

And it's still in use at low prices at a pharmacy near you.

There is a LONG list of poisons that the FDA, CDC, NIH, and AMA allow to be in our food chain, medicines, and various everyday products.

Check the Details section; this product is mercury-free. The active ingredient is Benzalkonium Chloride and the inactive ingredients are Alcohol, Acetone, FD&C Red No. 4, and Purified water.

The FDA appears to have banned OTC use of thimerosal in the 1990s. That bottle would need labels indicating it's toxic if it had mercury in it.

Edit: thimerosal is still used in the flu shot.

In the body, it is metabolized or degraded to ethylmercury (C2H5Hg+) and thiosalicylate.

Is that in reference to the original formula? Because I'm not finding anything about Benzalkonium Chloride being metabolized into any form of mercury.

idk I was just skimming the wikipedia article on thiomersal because I had never heard of it. The quotation was from the 'toxicology' section.
