It is only a matter of time before people "Jail-Break" these vehicles.

I know of it already being done to numerous agricultural machines that attempted to lockout owners from doing basic maintenance a few years back.

Yeah but we don't really want to rely on some Eastern Europoor's hack that may backdoor the system. This problem has the same solution that so many others do, shooting bankers.

It's not bankers creating that software. It's the manufacturers like John Deere that lock out their equipment and vehicles.

That's why you hire local. I foresee a day where we have hackers hired in places like mechanic's shops, not just network/game/software security.

That might not last long.
-Messing with emissions 'smog' testing is a federal crime with big fines. Just ask Volkswagon AG.
-Sharkfins ensure full time government and corporate surveillance of location/audio/video/phone pairing/eberthing.
-Even wheel sensors transmit the identity of every vehicle to every roadside stoplight camera sensor.

They will hide some sort of remote kill switch outside of the ECU, maybe time-based, or just have a cop steal your vehicle.

IF it can be installed, THEN it can be uninstalled.

It is that simple.

[ - ] TheNoticing 1 point 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 10:15:57 ago (+1/-0)

Not if it's a part on a motherboard.

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 2 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 10:38:33 ago (+2/-0)*

Motherboards, CPUs, ECUs, and other components can be sourced and installed.

A more viable solution could even be simply disconnecting the motherboard, and instead installing a CPU that runs the same software on in an emulator that allows give you full control of the car's systems.

It's just a matter of people being motivated to the point to make it happen.

Motherboards used to be regularly hacked. There's less of that now, but it could make a come-back if needed.

This isn't locked for mechanics. It's locked because they don't want you removing the tracking and autopilot crap

And then not only void the warranty, the “certified/authorized” shops will not be allowed to service the vehicle..
Cheers!

Telemetry too. They can compare the habits of farmers to find the most successful methods and most fertile soil and then sell that information.

[ - ] Sector2 2 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 01:18:02 ago (+2/-0)

Horse users unaffected.

[ - ] TheNoticing 1 point 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 10:15:00 ago (+1/-0)

Also outdated farming equipment, but not an invasive species.

Fucking cocksuckers. Die you fucking cunts! I wish death upon these motherfuckers.

Note what the 2nd screen says. This is probably the manufacturer's response to thieves giving money to crooked dealers who then give a spare key to the thieves. The thieves will then go back to your brand new vehicle (in a airport parking lot, driveway, whatever), hop in like they own it and drive away. Next thing you know your vehicle is in Africa or Middle East. This is what happened to a coworker's brand new truck.
Here's an example

I can kind of understand the reasoning, when you stick drive-by-wire and steer-by-wire into a vehicle you don't want someone to be able to just plug in and turn the the vehicle into a booby-trap - or worse, a killing machine. But maybe, just maybe, we shouldn't be letting cars be computer controlled in the first place.

Government is mandating all that shit.
Because insurance and medical costs. And swerve driving niggers and zombie post menopausals proud and independent.
Because why?

Suzie can continue with her TikTok feed and let the car do the driving.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 09:59:29 ago (+1/-0)

Because why?

Too many low IQ shitskins. They don't have the capacity to drive properly. Neither do women.

Paying over $10,000 for a scanner is absolutely retarded.

[ - ] Prairie 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 12:52:45 ago (+0/-0)

So it's a money-making scheme, basically. They lock things down so they can charge a regular fee to let you unlock it.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 15:29:40 ago (+0/-0)

You see that shit everywhere. Fuck, it's in bicycles FFS.

[ - ] mikenigger 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 11:18:16 ago (+0/-0)

any proof he's locked out of everything, not just immobilizer functions? this is exactly how a dealer working with thieves would spread FUD

[ - ] registereduser 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 10:58:25 ago (+0/-0)

Good.

If you are stupid enough to buy a car, washer/drier, coffee maker or a hundred other things that needlessly and stupidly have computers in them you deserve this.

My oldest vehicle is 33 years old, the youngest is 24. When they require repair, I repair them.

[ - ] UncleDoug 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 08:39:32 ago (+0/-0)

Don't participate in the system. Name and shame every manufacturer and hurt them in the wallet for every car that has this as standard, all by returning your vehicle and convincing others not to purchase their products.

Remember when Mercedes had a subscription to use the air-conditioning and heated seats?

[ - ] 2plus2equals5 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 09:13:54 ago (+0/-0)

"Don't participate in the system."

https://www.linkedin.com/company/alliance-of-automobile-manufacturers
"The Auto Alliance represents 77% of all car and light truck sales in the United States, including the BMW Group, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz USA, Mitsubishi Motors, Porsche, Toyota, Volkswagen Group of America and Volvo Car USA."

It's even bigger than that now.

(Noticeably absent are Honda and Subaru....Hyundai if you are ok with a 100k beater.)

[ - ] UncleDoug 0 points 3 weeksMay 25, 2024 09:39:13 ago (+0/-0)

So 1/4 of vehicles aren't in that alliance.
