We have a cheap firm bargain mattress with a MyPillow 3" topper.
In fact, we have five of them, two at the farm and three at the lake.
We tossed two Tempur-pedics and a couple other expensive mattresses.
A few years ago, we bought a cheapo mattress on sale for a guest room. It was awful. Couldn't return it, so we added the topper, and it was great.
Over the next couple years, we swapped out all the old ones for about $700-800 each.
Everyone loves them.

You might be me 6 mos ago. We had bargain mattress with mypillow topper that was working. Then one day suddenly the wife started getting back pains and nerve pain. Had no idea why. Then we switched sides of the bed for one night and then I woke up with unexplainable back pain, unlike I've ever had. Waited a week. Repeated experiment. Same exact thing. Mattresses are now built so they can't be flipped.
So we rotated to see if it would help and it did not. Went to costco and got something with springs and now we sleep so much better with no strange back pains. Total night and day diff with overnight success, the both of us. We glanced at tempurpedic but didn't want to put a 2nd mortgage on the house. Costcos in store price is less than online price, btw.

I now have a theory that most people who suffer from mysterious breathing back pains or from sciatica pains just need a new mattress.

I'm telling you: If anyone slept on our old mattress for one night they would absolutely develop something very, very, wrong. I should have put it in a traveling carney show as a haunted item.

Glad you figured it out.
The cheap mattresses we bought were spring type, not foam.
Also, we have replaced the MyPillow topper on our bed. They don't last forever.

The cheap mattresses we bought were spring, too, so beware. This happened at about the 2.5 years old mark.

The mattress we use was the first one, and the only one that is used on a regular basis. I think it's 4-5 years old, so far so good. Maybe we got lucky.

For what it's worth. My wife got the medium springs and I got the firm. And it was her side that fucked everyone up.

Just watch out for back pain when breathing or anything sciatic, is all I'm saying!

edit

That doesnt make sense I realize now. So to further explain we got 2 tall twins and placed it on an eastern king box spring (turns out 2x t.twins equals the same size as e.king), so basically each of us has our own firmness without the gimmick. They sell foam seperator things for the line down the middle of the mattreses. Covered the whole thing under mypillow foam. We thought we were geniuses but it truly fucked us up after a couple years. Well mostly her but certainly me also after only 3 nights over a long span using scientific method.

Some mattresses are literal bastards and hers was one of them. I just checked and use a costco Serta with springs now (not a hybrid) Vanilla w/ no topper and now that I think more about the old ones; they didn't have a brand. When we threw them away we noticed there was tags but not a brand. So maybe we went too cheap.

I tried both. Me and the missus prefer the Tempur-pedic. Very nice. But lay on them both and see what you think.

Sleepnumber seems... gimmicky. And their sales people make me want to punch the company RIGHT IN THE PUSSY.

They want like $3300 for Queen-Sized mattress. I'd rather spend $600 on an inflatable one that I can get maybe half as much us from and then discard.

Yeah, well. We were still fancy back then when we bought it. Better times, and all that.
I'd still say it's kind of worth it. It's the comfiest bed we've ever had.

The had an even expensiver one, made out of silly exotic stuff which was cooler and somehow even comfier, but it was SO MUCH more expensive that we went with the 'safe' choice. We had just bought a new house and I was used to spending like a sailor, so it just fir, at that moment. I still don't regret it, except for the times when the missus goes insane and I don't want to be around her, but that's what the boat is for. And why I'm aboard now.

Neither one.
Plenty of top tier beds for under $1500USD.
We have Serta pillow top a decade old and it's like new.
Perfect firmness without the memory foam bullshit

If it was 1500 ten years ago then it costs 2500 today.
